@All, I just ran across this delightful TED Talk which demonstrates robot-human interaction. Enjoy

Gold

Thank you Jon and Jennifer for the course.

Who were the Krell?

I don't know who the Krell were. He/She could be a being of ancient civilization or a being of a future civilization from another planet but Earth.

Thanks for a great series of presentations!

@cpu - We're so glad you enjoyed this series!

Thanks Jon, very thoughtful views. Have a great weekend.

Iron

@ Jon, very enjoyable discussion. Hope you come back soon. Thanks Jennifer and Stephanie.

Iron

@cpu, @Leo...  yes, the children where 'following' what they saw Adults do tons of times...
from people all around them...  just never realized what Credit Cards 'looked like'
to kids...  LOL!

Iron

??? Remote viewing. Probably outside the scope of these courses, but can't hear enough about this subject. Russians (and long ago, Nazis) worked quite a bit on this.

Yes, used quite extensively by our own forces with a high sucess rate.

Iron

One of the verses in one of my 'save the world songs '

They tell our childeren what they want

They tell the what to buy

They work them to a frenzy

A must-have Buy-me high

We see the things they crave for

We see them make a fuss

How many of us realize

They do the same to us...

Thank you all -- Have a great weekend -- Jon

@ child hand scan: Swipe, beep, take. Consumer indoctrination! Who needs money? And, if you believe the Bible, soon they will have the means to make purchases IN THEIR HAND.

I know those prophecies. They do seem to imply impants or ID system.

Iron

Can you think of other vivid thought sequences that can be used as part of our experience based language?

Telepathy, moving objects using your brain, developing of our brain to be able to use all its skills.

-- Yes, telekenesis is an interesting topic. There are actually toys and devices made in russia to help train children. And, many countries have psy-ops teams that have developed 'sensitivities'

Iron

@ child hand scan: Swipe, beep, take. Consumer indoctrination! Who needs money? And, if you believe the Bible, soon they will have the means to make purchases IN THEIR HAND.

Iron

@MAR     And those who know about "buy" and "Steal" only have the 11th Commandment in mind:

"Don't get caught!"

Iron

thx for the presentation

But what was there was knowing that somehow, the item was 'gotten' when done.

It was interesting to me when > 1 did it!  They must have seen their parents get things

so many times like this, without the concept of 'buying'.

Iron

Socrates, wow. Or as the Who said, the kids are allright.

Iron

@Jon, No, the children were just pushing their hands...

The idea of a card was not there...

Iron

wanted -- sorry - -

Iron

Or were they just ringing something up that they wanter?

Iron

@Jon..  While waiting for Photos in Walmart, I was surprised at the number of small
children, that brought something to the counter (while their parents were looking at other
things..) and 'swiped' their hand to take the item.  In so many ways, 'we' don't even know
how our actions are being interpretted, and the original meanings lost....

I have not seen this. Did they have a debit card?

Iron

??? What you describe seems to apply very well to much of the hip-hop music and culture. Foul language, wrong is right, right is wrong, degrading of women. I am great because of my money. Surprising that the young people, especially the females, don't see through this. Hope our future advanced societal machine is not flooded with this "culture".

They used to say the same about rock and roll when I was a kid.

There is a greek quote from Soccrates --

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

I think this a recurring curse of humanity.

Iron

lease let Jon know here in the chat if you are interested in a future course on these subjects that is moretechnical, and if so, please indicate which specific topic you are interested in learning more about.

I think good topics would be Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Travels to the stars and encounter with criatures that can help us to increase and get better our technology, Integration of technology with healthcare.

Iron

??? What is a "Ping Pattern"?

It was ping pong balls arranged in a bell curve (guassian) pattern.

Iron

@jamal

That's true or ordinary investors. But HFTer's are not necessarily brokers. They are in there to make many, many small kills.

Iron

???Jon, a future course on how to design or even a detailed analysis of MMI designs that are seemless. Where the function and use is "obvious" or intuitive for the user. With emphasis on what type of elements make it so.

This could be a good subject. A focus on efficiency over complicated interfaces.

Thanks -

Iron

brokers is another world, try to pass an order by the time it is accepted bid/ask take another turn.

wise ppl rely on prediction with arbitrage.

Iron

??? Jon, you use the term "lowest uncommon denominator". Please tell me what you mean by that.

There are those that push the boundaries of acceptible behavior. Growing up, I would never use the foul language and crudity and disrespect for women I see common in todays society. Shock value entertainments makes it a competition to crudity, how far can you go? How many people can you insult? How decdent can you be?

That is what I meant....

Iron

Signing off now. Happy Friday.

Iron

Thank you for Jon for great explanation. I really appreciated. Looking forward for more lecture from you in the near future. Have a great weekend.

Iron

Can you think of other vivid thought sequences that can
be used as part of our experience based language?

Jon in plain english please sorry I am tech oriented

Iron

Thank you Jon and Jennifer

Iron

???????What was the early experiment that you referenced with the pattern changing to result in feeding?

A little detail. Ping Pong Balls are dropped vertically into a matrix of pegs, where they fall through the matrix bouncing off the pegs until they reach a barrier at the bottom.

Normally, again and again, this creates a gaussian distribution where the highes number of balls ends up in the center and the number of balls decreases the further away from center you go.

When the animals get food when the balls hit on the far right, the patters change somehow, repeatibly.

I will look through my video archives. If I find the info, i will try and see if it is copywrighted, If I can get permission, maybe we can post it and do a lecture series describing the 5 new laws of quantum mechanics and how that changes our perception of reality.

Iron

Thanks again   Look forwared to another course

Iron

Thanks to Digi-Key, Design News, Jon and Jennifer for an interesting, thought-provoking series. Have a great weekend everyone!

Iron

@olyh01 is correct about HFT. It is, on its face, "insider trading", and patently illegal.

Trade in stocks very carefully...

Iron

Hello. Excuse me, too late.

Thanks Jon, Jennifer, and CEC for the class. Very interesting!.

Iron

@cpu

>>>Not detected initially.<<<

I thought they claim it to be totally legal... They identify the order, but place their own order split milliseconds earler (and have the network infrastructure that guarantees the desired delivery), then sell the order they are able to intercept to the original party

Iron

high frequence trading rely on spotting a platform that is delayed in real time then using that disadvanrage.

it was with currency trading but No more.

Iron

Thanks Jon, Jennifer  Design News and Digi-Key.

Iron

High frequency trading has been limited by the exchanges which put fuses on huge price swings. That being said, we could reduce HFT by bringing back the fractional prices of stocks (1/8, 1/4, 3/8) so that there would be a more meaningful spread than 0.01 pennies.

Gold

??? Jon, you use the term "lowest uncommon denominator". Please tell me what you mean by that.

Iron

What means HoJo?

Howard Johnson hotels, I'd guess...

Yes a restauraunt --

Iron

???Curious... we seem very interconnected these days, but aren't there still large parts of the world that are not? How does that affect the collective conscious?

Iron

Hear of high frequence trading ? They deliberately creates software to do split milliseond trading

-- Yes, I have heard of this practice, as well as how a few folks could manipulate Libor for profit and gain.

Power holds on to itself and like an organism, feeds off others.

Iron

>>>exoskeleton enhancing human abilities<<<

see this as well...

The new bionics that let us run, climb and dance

http://www.ted.com/talks/hugh_herr_the_new_bionics_that_let_us_run_climb_and_dance

Iron

@olyh01 I heard fo that just the other day. Some people were making profits by becoming middlemen along a chain of trading transactions, and were making money in milliseconds during their handling of the transaction. Not detected initially.

Iron

??? I'd like more references to go with the bulleted items in the PPT presentation.  I still can't find any valid research on the "storage and recall" of memories.  I don't belive it . . .

Read Michio Kakus boot, or, research his interviews and lectures on the subject of the brain.

That is where I was made aware of the current state or research and progress.

Iron

I was asked once how many bosses I had I answered three and how many in my team i was asked, i was the only one.

Iron

@jamal

Hear of high frequence trading ? They deliberately creates software to do split milliseond trading

Iron

??? Jon, what do you think about the future of A.I.? For me, it's not a question of if, but a question of when, robots will take over (que terminator references...).

AI is getting better and brilliant people like Asimov were aware of the implications.

If we all tie together in a collective conscious able to influence our surroundings, we could be witnessing the creation of a new organizm where we are but a cell.

Iron

Democracy is not the ideal system but it is the best so far.

Iron

Pure is Democracy is majority rule or 2 wolves and a sheep deciding whats for dinner.

Iron

time to go. Thanks Jon and all for a really interesting week.

Iron

But in a democracy we end up with the opinions of the majority. The majority could be wrong. In a republic the elected reps *should* be more high-minded in choosing their actions based on our desires AND what is right. The risk is those reps could be scoundrels, but that is why we all vote for the good person who does not make idle promises of hope and offering eveyone free money. Don't we?

Yes majorities can be wrong and this is where a strong good hearted leader must prove leadership and not cave in.

Truth based news would be a nice place to start, but spin is everywhere and politics has become a team sport.

Iron

??? Jon, what do you think about the future of A.I.? For me, it's not a question of if, but a question of when, robots will take over (que terminator references...).

Iron

I have seen traders rely fully on their software to pass orders ( you may say triggers but not).

Unfortunate there are ppl who rely on similar tools to take actions ( you think they make decisions).

Iron

@cpu, correct. The majority might be wrong. They might (and have) condone slavery, for example.

Gold

Also, here is a story about an exoskeleton enhancing human abilities.

??? How about ideas for the next big advances in HMIs. Using intuition, and minimum number of steps to have a user select what they want on a machine, instrument, etc.

I like simplification. If we can streamline our interfaces to highlight the functions we use and want and discard the ones we don't.

By the way -- here is another contender to google glass --

http://www.designnews.com/author.asp?section_id=1386&doc_id=272899&cid=nl.dn17

Iron

@cpu, Google does a lot of that anticipation of what you want now in its browser.

Gold

@olyh01:  I don't know since I've pretty much tuned-out a while ago.  Thank goodness I can be very selective via the internet and that's why I believe strongly in net neutrality.

Iron

Am also interested in other courses by Jon Gabay :)

In the classic 1956 science fiction film, Forbidden Planet, the extinct race of advanced beings of the planet Altair IV are known as the "Krell". The Krell had reached a stage of technological and scientific development so advanced that they were able to construct a vast underground machine with virtually unlimited power; a machine that could turn thoughts into reality and project that reality anywhere on the planet

In respect of making us more aware of the looming subjagation of the majority by the technological and financial powers it was correctly pointed out that the Continuum TV series is raising questions about transnational corporations becoming our defacto masters. I would like to find out whether the Netmundial conference is spitting into the wind or gaining traction.

Iron

Louisville, ms

Iron

??? I've heard it said that "pure democracy is evil". It is animal nature to take more for yourself. Not simply human nature - watch how cats behave.

I don't know how to respond to this. I think evil and evil intent can exist in every person or organization.

I think this is a battle we all have to fight.

I think the first act of a conscious and aare mind is the decision to be good or evil, self serve or serve others, or what shade of gray we are comfortable with.

I think if honorable people of consious and heart are the leaders, it doesn't matter whazt structure is in place. An honest democracy is nice because it at least lets us know how our society feels on certain subject.

Iron

Yes, as lbrooks said too.

Iron

Thank you Jon, Jennifer et al.

Iron

Jon, for future topics, I would like a serie more specific on touch-screen.

The Do's and Don'ts, the importance of visual & audio feedback at the instant of the touch,

the importance of not to have a too crowded screen, etc...

Iron

Jon, a future course on how to design or even a detailed analysis of MMI designs that are seemless. Where the function and use is "obvious" or intuitive for the user. With emphasis on what type of elements make it so.

Iron

??? How about ideas for the next big advances in HMIs. Using intuition, and minimum number of steps to have a user select what they want on a machine, instrument, etc.

Iron

Eventually we will have a device checking, following, and correcting our actions, doing tasks and controlling our thoughts based on the waves from our brain.

Iron

For a 1956 film "Forbidden Planet" the Krell were a extinct race from Altair IV.

Iron

@JCG64

and who controls Madison Ave these days, and who controls their controller

Iron

??? I'd like more references to go with the bulleted items in the PPT presentation.  I still can't find any valid research on the "storage and recall" of memories.  I don't belive it . . .

I would like to see a more technical course on the design of HMI, such as "The High Performance HMI Handbook" by Hollifield, Oliver, Nimmo and Habibi.

Iron

@smcallster...wouldn't be much of a secret agency if the public knew what they were doing..

Iron

Krell were the people of the planet Altiar who had the ability to  create what they thought about.

Nightmares are not a good thing to think about - deadly as they found out - - -

Iron

???????What was the early experiment that you referenced with the pattern changing to result in feeding?

I have it somewhere in my old VCR based video archives.  It was performed by a psychology department at a major university.

I actually have a short video clip of the professor who carried out the research and his test setup.

I will do a web search later to see if i can find references and post after the live chat. I think this site will still be active after the live chat so check back in a few days.

Iron

??? I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and discussion this week.  I would be interested in learning more about RFID if another course was going to be spun off of this one.

Iron

I think in the observation that a child wanted the computer to tell him what to do rather than require him tell him what to do is not chilling. Far from it. I wasnt there but the other conclusion coul dbe that the child viewed it as he knows what he wants to accomplish and the computer shoul dhelp him accomplish that in a guided fashion rahter than the child having ot figure out all the bits and pieces. I feel teh same way, I enjoy programming but I owuld like to work out the process and idea with the computer and have the compyuter take care of the trivia.

I have worked with a few specialized computer languages that let me do that but they were for very narrow applicaiton spaces but man was I productive.

Iron

??? I've heard it said that "pure democracy is evil". It is animal nature to take more for yourself. Not simply human nature - watch how cats behave.

Iron
Thank you Jon; really interesting scope of material covered, and good job of consistently including reminder of how great all this technology stuff is, but that as with anything new that has profound consequences, to always be aware of [often] unintended implications that could threaten all of the freedoms we value. (And agreed, it most certainly should not be a partisan issue.)
Iron

??? I'd like to have more related subject matter from Jon Gabay. There were many thoght provoking points in these lectures.

Iron

What about being plugged into the matrix?

Bio energy - bs -- Mind control virtual reality - closer to the mark.

Iron

@fjgalan, We might question what point democracy becomes a mobocracy

Gold

Thanks again Jon and D-K.  I think that our society has been overwhelmingly controlled by Madison Ave via T.V. years ago.  More recently, certain news channels have gone down this dark path.  So sad!

Iron

Thanks Jon and Jennifer. Thanks everyone.

???? Jon, how about course on data fusion thru the Internet of things.

That could be a good topic, espically with cloud services becomeing more sophisticated.

Iron

Jon's final question was: Who were the Krell?

Krell, maybe on brain experiments?

Thanks Jon, great course!

Iron

The potentential for mass control exists    How does society prevent it.

Just look at what the NSA got away with with no knowlage fron the public

There are not enogh Snowden's to go arround to keep us informed

Iron

Please let us know on the chat if you are interested in a future course on these subjects that is more
technical, and if so, please indicate which specific topic you are interested in learning more about.

@jeniffer, jon,

Thanks for the class. it was a great week

Iron

Wow -- I see we have those who know of the Forbidden Planet movie and the Krell helemt that made everything we thought about into a real item.

And how their society was destroyed over night by the 'creatures from the id'.

No matter how far they had advanced, they were still primitive beasts inside, and when their technology was unleashed, that side of them destroyed their civilzation.

Iron

@deez, totally agree with:

Re anecdote about child learning to program machines really wanting to know what the computer wanted *him* to do: chilling, indeed!

Iron

Thanks jon. ANY use of packet assembler in any of thes applications?

Iron

"Forbidden Planet" was where we heard of the Krell.

Iron

Your treatise on this range of subjects is very informative. You point out many different issues and consequences of this manmachine interface. I enjoyed the approach and found it interesting.

Thank you.

@Jeniffer, Jon,

A very very great week of knowledge

See you

Iron

Thanks Jon and Jen

This was an interesting and thought provoking lecture

Iron

Yesterday I was in a conference of Internet of Everything, I seems dangerouly, but I see a light, if our opinion can get in realtime, for what need politics than say that represent us but work for him interest?

The dream of direct democracy is posible!

Iron

Than you very much jon and Jennifer, vwey good information.

Iron

Thanks for the course.

I think the Krell was a civilization created in the movie "Forbidden Planet" that destroyed themselves with their thoughts.

Iron

Last 4 days were great. Thanks

Iron

fabulous presentation ... thanks.

Didn't one of the automakers have "enhanced reality" where a hazard (e.g. a deer walking across the road) is highlighted on the windshield on a heads-up display? Was it Cadillac?

Iron

Carl Sagan's old TV series "Cosmos" has been revived and updated, hosted by Theoretical Physicist Neil Degrasse Tyson on the NatGeo channel. It's a 13-part series worth watching. Very educational.

It will be really hard for the "little" people to safe guard thier personal being from the "Network"

The "Netork" is too easy to control.

Iron

On MotorWeek TV show they even suggested one could watch this dash-mounted display INSTEAD of the view out the windshield.

You mean 100 years ago I couldn't order something from amazon and have it delivered to my doorstep in just 1 or two days?

Iron

@Jon : what's that about gesture & 3D technology ? (audio just came on and I missed the beginning)  ; yes I'd be interested ; I will be looking into the Colibri technology from Microchip...

Many people experience issues with IE. Also, make sure your flash player is updated with the current version. Some companies block live audio streams, so if that is the case for your company, the class will be archived on this page immediately following the class and you can listen then. People don't experience any issues with the audio for the archived version.

@jrc_fw: you could just click the link above and keep it open in another browser tab, then fill it out at the end of today's class

a suggestion to the host ... since we login to listen, can there be some kind of automated email for the Course Evaluation Form.  I don't like filling it out before the class is completed, and have had times that I simply forgot to go back if fill out the evaluation within the two weeks.

Hello from E. Mich

Please remember to fil out the Course Evaluation Form! You are eligible to earn IEEE Professional Development Hours by attending these courses and participating in the chat function. Additionally, we are no longer using the points system, offering "graduation", or giving grades. The IEEE hours are taking the place of that. There are some important things for you to know about earning the hours. The most important ones are that you need to attend these courses live, you need to attend a minimum of two of them per semester, you need to fill out a course evaluation form within 2 weeks of the end of the class, you need to attend 4 out of the 5 classes per course, and you need to participate in the chat function every day you attend. Please click on the link at the top of this page that says "How do I earn IEEE professional development hours" to read all of these important details and more.
