I've used Yocto and OpenEmbedded

Iron

tHe topics were well noted

Iron

Self Study - Embedded linux

Fedora, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Debian, BSD, Solaris

Which host and host OS is needed to try Yocto build?

Iron

@Ing. Manuel Malagon: I am also looking into Zynq. Google "yocto zynq"

I imagine the results will make more sense to us when we finish the course.

Iron

Thanks Khem, Colleen, design news, and Digi-Key!

Iron

Is any board based on the Zynq SoC supported?

@EmbedXControls Yocto provides tools for helping in meeting License compliance. Its being developed further where it can talk to fossology servers per-file bases to help in identifying licenses. Other question you asked is whats special about yocto project. There are many list some it lets you easily build customized embedded linux systems, supports all kind of processor architectured. Easy mechanism to chose packages and also replace completing packages

Blogger

@Khem,  Thank you, for the info.  I am looking forward to the rest of the classes i this course.

@sanjaac SH is not in Core architecture list which means its not built daily but there are people using Yocto Project for SH3/SH4

Blogger
@lynnbr2 I will also talk about using QTcreator and Eclipse IDE with Yocto project SDKs in one of following lectures. hopefully that will cover what you want
Blogger

@ImageEgnineer beaglebone black or raspberrypi are some of well supported ones.

Blogger

Sounds interesting. Looking forward to rest of the lectures.

Iron

@montanalou its generates both binaries and source packages that you need to distribute in case you distribute software

Blogger

@Khem

Got it - truly custom (hopefully the best of all worlds ;-)  Thanks!

Iron

@rstengi yes it can be windows, you would install VM player and then use the yocto build appliance to build Yocto on windows.

Blogger

@gbabecki ah Yocto basically generates one for you. Its not debian/fedora/ubuntu or any of those. Its a distro of its own when created.

Blogger

@Khem

No sorry, I was asking about the Linux distro serving as the basis for your YOCTO custom embedded Linux.

Iron

Can the build host be Windows?

Iron

gbabecki: I assume you are asking Linux Distro you would run on build host machine that you will use to build Yocto Project I believe ? in that case it does not matter, from Projects pov all supported distros and versions are lists and tested for when yocto build starts and if a distro on which given version of yocto project hasnt been tested it notifies you

Blogger

@78RPM, It depeneds on individual, however it has bit of everything to offer. Collaborative nature of projects helps learning and developing skils rapidly.

Blogger

@Khem

Thanks; paring down the distribution certainly makes sense, but how does one choose between say Ubuntu vs. Debian as the starting point?

Iron

?? @Khem Raj
Are we, as Open Source students, motivated more by opportunity to make money, or because we are fans of Star Trek and believe in a world of Open Education and level opportunity for all?  Is Open Source the replacement for high school shop classes and woodworking classes and sheet metal classes?

Platinum

@gbabecki, there are many factors, usually you do not want it to pull in unneeded dependencies that General purpose Linux distro will bring. so you want to have the software set that you absolutely need and nothing more.

Blogger

@Gautam reference BSPs are small however, in following lectures I will go through how to use an existing BSP and add a new machine.

Blogger

@Khem

Are there any guidelines or tips for selecting a Linux distro to use as the basis for an embedded Linux?  Aside from the obvious features I would imagine memory footprint is a considerable factor.

Iron

Ah, thanks for the link, left a similar message at another (older) lecture ..

Iron

@anandkumarcr RT Linux is not part of this lecture series, since its a subject of its own to talk for a whole Lecture series. Yocto project supports RT linux very well though. May be some later dates

Blogger

@awardak you are welcome

Blogger

@bangor077 openhardware yes, beagleboard is using it raspberripi is using it and more

Blogger

Red Hat Linux, Integrated development tools with managed upgrade.

Iron

Real time Linux was mentioned in past presentations. Check the archived lessons.

Iron
Thank you Khem . You haven't touched upon real time Linux . Are we getting something on that in near future ?

@78RPM it has lot of goodness, you work in open environment, learn a lot develop skills that are then high in demand in companies.

Blogger

@checkman  Thanks.  I didn't know who to ask, but you seem official!

Iron

Thank you for the suggestion wayneo, I'll forward it on.

Iron

@Manuel BSP guide is what you will need

Blogger

@RSWeaver, you can retrieve the archived audio for this and other Digi-Key classes by clicking on the link below the Digi-Key Continuing Education Center logo. http://www.designnews.com/lecture-calendar.asp

Platinum

Archive is now available, simply hit play on the player

Iron

@Gautam one can create a BPS layer and get yocto project compliance on it or not thats fine. The BSP can be hosted anywhere, Yocto systems builder knows how to fetch it from anywhere.

Blogger

@RSWeaver, it will be available in about an hour and you can reach it through the archive link that will appear on this page

Iron

@khem: How is a new BSP absorbed into the yocto project? Should the BSP be committed to upstream to kernel.org to be available?

Iron

@checkman, that is a terrific idea. It would eliminate a lot of complaints.

Platinum

Will the audio from this presentation be available, and if so where would it be stored

Iron

Is there a comprensive document that directly guides through the process of customizing and deploying linux in a custom board? Or shall I dive in to all the documentation and figure it out?

Eclipse:  Video available

https://www.yoctoproject.org/tools-resources/projects/eclipse-ide-plug

Cheers.

Iron

?? @Khem Raj,
What motivates someone to participate in an Open-Source project?
Is it the Yikkus ("recognition" in Yiddish language), or is it money, or a job Resume click?
Why do you participate in this project?

Platinum

@cghaba you can use any architecture its easier if an existing BSP exists

Blogger

@checkman  A suggestion for all of the DigiKey lectures is to stream some music ten minutes prior to the start of the lecture, so people can test their audio channel

Iron

@anandkumarcr libraries are upgraded whenever the upstream project for that library makes new release. however when we release yocto then major versions are pinned to whatever it was at release time

Blogger

Does Yocto allows you to customize embedded linux for any given board or any given microprocessor or SoC based on one of the listed processors?

Iron

Hi Khem, thanks for the intro.  We're beginning to use Yocto on a project so this should be helpful.

Iron

Thhanks -- see you tomorrow.

Iron

@bobybacs yes there is a plugin for Eclipes for Yocto we will talk about it in following lectures

Blogger

@emertp  All presentations are available in the archive after the session is over

Iron
How often are the C Libs updated ? With open embedded we get the latest

Great presentation

Iron

Thank you all for a very informative lectuer.

I shall hope to see you all tomorrow ...

Iron

Thanks for a very interesting presentation.  I think the reason I have avoided Linux to this point was because of all of the configuring and tweaking that had to go on.  Perhaps now is the time to look at it, especially since I am working on embedded systems now.

Iron

@aalbashar you can install VM player on Windows and yocto project provided a VM player image for a builder to run on it that you can use

Blogger

It does not matter what kind of hardware do you have. Yocto project gives you all the tools and steps necessary to customize embedded linux for any given board isn't it?

Does Cola Git work?

Iron

I have never used embedded Linux, just .NET Framework.

It looks great.

Iron

@Khem: is there any IDE like Eclipse for Yocto ?

Iron

Nice Khem, appreciate it

Any open hardware using Yocto right now?

Iron

@Khem: There seems to be only limited set of BSP's that yocto supports. I am looking forward for BSP on mini2440 board. How is yocto project solving this problem?

Iron

I didn;t look at git!

Iron

Thanks for the lecture and I look forward to your answers to my two questions.

Iron

Very good intro. Look forwards for tomorrow's lecture.

Iron

Khem,et.tal,

Thanks for presenatation and info

Iron

It was a nice lecture, I really enjoyed it! Thank you Khem!!

Iron

@gene http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-raspberrypi/

@aalbashar yes Yocto project tools can be installed on VM

Blogger

Very good lecture, Some examples in the embedded linux space are in home automation. Three Micasa Vera 3 uses a linix embedded system.

Iron

Freenode is a IRC server?

What is the URL?

Iron

join the group at:

http://www.linkedin.com/groups/DigiKey-Continuing-Education-Center-4223125?trk=my_groups-b-grp-v

Iron

Thank you very much!

Iron

My quick look at the Yocto site did not show me a version for the Raspberry PI.  Did I miss it in my quick look?

Iron

@cfreehill QEMU stands for quick emulator, it emulates another processor architecuture say on x86 it can emulate arm

Blogger

@lynnbr2 you can get it all for free in linux. Comes with everything you could need (at least for starters).

Does a build deliver source code or just the binary?

Iron

is it possible to install yocto tool on a virtual machine on a windows host?

Iron

Khem, thanks for the interesting presentation.

Iron

Can this run under Ubuntu?   Windows?

Iron

Will be ported to Raspberry Pi and Intel Galileo architecutes by example?

Iron

Thanks...good lecture.

About QEMU...what exactly does it stand for? (I know something about emulator). Also, did you say that the emulators come with yocto? Thanks.

Iron

Iron

Very interresting Thank you

Thanks Khem

THis should help with my controller projects.

Iron

I am novice to Linux where do I start?

Do you have suggestions on a development board to use to start learning yocto?

@anandkumar yes bootloader comes with it

Blogger

Thank you for the introduction

Iron

thanks for the talk & the help with this

Iron

Thank you Khem for the lecture and all the team of digikey continuous education

Thank you Khem, Design News and Digi-Key

Platinum

I'm looking forward to the rest of the week.

Iron

Thanks a lot, very nice and useful presentation!

Iron

Khem,

I enjoyed the lecture.  Thank you.

Iron

? Khem - Software Dev Environment Packages can be quite pricey....what is an economical way to get started in creating code ???

Iron

Good intro.  Seems like a lot of information to take in.

Iron

Thanks Khem.

Are you going to talk about separating prioprietary implementation in any installment?

Platinum

Thanks!  Very informative and well orgrnized.

Iron

Thank you so much.  Was not aware of the Yocto Project.

Iron

RASPBERRY PI -- and YOCTO

See here:

http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/meta-raspberrypi/

Cheers

Iron

hello? Is this thing on???

very interesting, this is a useful initiative

Iron

Yocto can be ported to architectures like Raspberry Pi o Intel Galileo?

Iron

thanks khem and colleen

Iron

Thank you Khem, very intresting subject.

Iron

Thanks, Khem and Company

Does it deliver source code/object code or both?

Iron

thank you for the presentation, I am looking forward to the rest of this class

Iron

Thanks Khem, Colleen, and Digi-Key!

Iron

GIT, IRC, Freenode #yocto, Wiki

Iron

Will subsequent days get into detail about customizing a distribution?

Thank you for the lecture.

Iron

A demo will be interesting, to grasp it.

Iron

sponsor, bug tracker, email.

Iron

What to read for tomorrow class?

Iron

email, IRC, Wiki, bug tracking

Iron

Thanks Khe Raj for nice presentation.

From slide 18 I would say Git

Iron

irc,twitter,facebook, myspace?

Iron

Are these professional training free or paid ?

#yocto and #oe on Freenode

Iron

#yocto and #oe irc channels

Iron

I think he is trying to tell you that to make use of this you will have to set up something like Slide 18 -- On linux

The create the code for your project and build your system.

Iron

Are there BSPs available for Raspberry PI and/or MinnowBoard?

Iron

What are different channels to communicate with Yocto project community ?

Iron

I do think Yocto makes sense for devices like Beagleboard

Iron

I do not know what SCM Yakto uses. I have to review.  I guess it's GIT by other respones. Will have to research.

Platinum

git apears source control

Iron

what Source control management system does Yocto project use ?

Iron

Am I correct in assuming that a Debian system with 100GB of available disk space is appropriate for Yocto project development?

Iron

IRC is basically a file server/chat room program that has been around a long time.

Iron

IRC Internet Relay Chat

Iron

How expert or how skilled in linux should I be in order to be able to successfully create embedded systems with yocto?

IRC=Internet Relay Chat

Iron

Could Yocto have been used to develop Kindle for example, which is linux-based at the core?

Iron

Seems to be very complete, but not quite straight forward to start

Iron

A one size fits all system would have to be AI and be able to distribute and optimize itself to each system.

Iron

Linux It's everywhere, it's everywhere ..  Kinda Like the Ray Stvens Sanata CLaus is watching you song.

YOCTO as people pointed out is a tool to build a custom distribution for your project -- of any complexity. The LINUX can be watching even more people and things.

Iron

Thank you for the explanation. Thanks Khem.

Iron

Yocto seems like an interesting topic. Can't wait to explore more of it.

Thanks Khem for the introduction and pointers to docs.

Iron

No doubt embedded linux is successful, but with purely custom UI development etc.

Not sure how feasible it is to make a one size fits all system

Iron

What differences are from Yocto Project compared to Open Embedded Project or others, nowaday?

Iron

@Khem Raj Thank you for the homework assignment.

Platinum

Yocto- (symbol y) is a prefix in the metric system denoting a factor of 10−24 or 0.000000000000000000000001 - see wikipedia. I don't know how this relates to the yocto project.

Iron

https://www.yoctoproject.org/

fwiw

Iron

Linux desktop is not nearly so successful as embedded Linux. My television camewith a Linux license, so it must have embedded Linux. My fancy keyboard came with a Linux license, so it must have embedded Linux. Many web cams are implemented on top of a Linux distro. It's everywhere, it's everywhere ...

Do we get a bootloader as part of the bundle ?

I haven't heard of YACTO either but I've heard of YOCTO...

Iron

Does anyone know how much memory a distribution uses on an embedded target. It must be pretty lean.

(YACTO) Yet Another Compiler Tool Organization... Just kidding

Platinum

Had not heard of Yacto Project

Iron

Can this be as successful as the linux desktop has been?

Iron

What is YACTO stand for ?

fragmentation?  Does he mean that a piece of code will not be duplicated?

Iron

Khem can you talk about Licensing model for Yacto Project based custom Emebedded Linux creation ?

Have not done Yocto project yet

Iron

New to Yocto project.

Iron

I see Yocto as a Framework to generate an embedded linux package for the hardware I specify.  I am hoping it will assist in figuring out just how to get started with embedded linux.

Iron

So how do we download and try Yocto

Iron

This is all new to me.

Iron

It seems the world is moving towards target agnostic.

Iron

Have not had Yocto project.

Iron

Want to learn Yocto for potential future projects.

Iron

I need to do more research on the Yocto project.  This is first time exposure.

Iron

yocto is used for embedded os development however you like it :)

Iron

integrated development environment for embedded linux systems

Iron

Just learning... seems a good framework for customizing embedded os

Iron

Curious about the Yocto Project

Iron

Does Yocto have a Eclipse plug in?

Iron

Have not done Yocto  Project yet

Iron

I see the main advantage with Yocto is coming up with a release for a custom hardware design.

Iron

I would define yocto linux for Raspberry Pi and ARM M4.

Iron

Can Yocto support Atmel Arduino hardware?

Iron

khem's? starting point for using linux in system..

planning to use Yocto in future projects

Iron

Not enough info yet; class just started but it sounds like a framework to craft unqiue embedded Linux from a selection of common distros.

Iron

yocto seems like an embedded linux project that is a cross between a build it yourself and a distribution. Gives you a solid strating point without any bloat

Iron

A basic framework for embedded OS.

Iron

My perspective on Yocto is: this is a framework within which I can include all the Linux tools necessary for a complete embedded system and exclude unnecessary tools.

Iron

but why do I trust that support might last several years?

Iron

Yocto used to customize linux build for different devices.

Iron

Set of utilities for building your won Linux distro

Iron

I still do not understand what the project is about.

Iron

An open source resource for building Embedded OS for a specific application

I have not done any Yocto project planning yet. I thought I would take the class first.

Iron

Yacto seems like a Framework to create a full Embedded Linux OS

my current guess is its a tool that helps specifying distribution components.

Trying to figure how to use Yocto project in my future embedded projects

Iron

A good base to start a linux project.

Iron

Just came into contact with Yocto Project via BBB Angstrom.

Iron

an effort to replicate what is available from vendors

Iron

I can't define it yet. I'm listening.

Platinum

How would you define Yocto project ?

Iron

Some one know a good site with tutorial about yocto?

Iron

QEMU is for QUick EMulator

http://wiki.qemu.org/Main_Page

Iron

If you refresh your browser, audio is going to be better.

Iron

@rclipat -

If you don't see the audio bar at the top of the screen, please refresh your browser. It may take a couple tries. When you see the audio bar, hit the play button. If you experience audio interruptions and are using IE, try using FF or Chrome as your browser. Many people experience issues with IE. Also, make sure your flash player is updated with the current version. Some companies block live audio streams, so if that is the case for your company, the class will be archived on this page immediately following the class and you can listen then. People don't experience any issues with the audio for the archived version.

Iron

does it mean that I need to run it from a Linux host? I guess the answer is yes

Iron

Very good.  I'm sure it's my company's firewall. We are also using IE.

What is QEMU stands for /?

Sound work well with Chrome, thanks kiacovacci !

@roger ,sorry to hear, have you tried all the below suggestions? If so and it still does not work, please come back to listen to the archived show.

Iron

Audio is cutting in and out.

Iron

No audio....but the chat is fun!

How to build my own BSPs for my board?

Iron

If you can't hear, be sure to get the archived version later because he is saying good things

Iron

I think I figured out. My TI is cutting the audio stream. I will check recorded class. Thank you.

Iron

if none of the below suggestions work, you might want to come back and listen to the archive version available after this show has aired. A lot of times when people have problems with the live show, the often have no issues with the archived version.

Iron

How do I know if my architecture (let's say, SuperH), is supported? (SH supports Linux)

Iron

I've run Ubuntu as a user environment, but no embedded systems

Iron

I use Ubuntu and Fedora but have not used Linux in an embedded device yet.

Iron

Have not worked on linux yet.

Iron

Ubuntu, Debian, Suse, Red Hat, ....

Iron
What about BSPs ? For custom boards ?

I haven't loaded Linux in awhile, but I'm interested

Iron

Does it mean one can build anything Linux for a specific CPU and board, just by using Yocto?

Iron

Just learning about using embedded Linux so have not used any. Played a bit with Ubuntu on a PC.

Iron

Have used Suse, Ubuntu, Debian, etc.

Hope to be able to make a minimal, fast-booting system for an upcoming project using Yocto

Iron

on desktop (VMware), Renesas 7724, Freescale iMX6

New to Linux, have used to a Ubuntu to a limited extent

Iron

Ubuntu, OpenBSD, Debian

until now I've used in-house developed embedded RTOS

Iron

But I have never worked on Embedded System but looking forward to Yocto project and see how can I beneift from it.

Ubunut, Angstrom, Raspian.

Iron

hi esorato, if none of the below suggestions work you might want to check back later and listen to the archive.

@tracyhayford   Chrome is what I use. No problems

Iron

@tracyhayford, Chrome is the best browser for this class.  Works great.

Platinum

@78RPM Gold, I had a thing or two I wanted to share

and did not know how... then lost some interest.

Bill Schweder is quoted as saying that

"Voltage is not power, but we still need it."

I have been quoted as saying that

"Current implies power, a source, a load, and a complete circuit".

Iron

Hi. Where to access the live presentation?

Iron

Hello from Cedar Rapids Iowa

Iron

@johnwolf.lobo@gmail.com... we may be related. Know anybody in Indiana or Arizona?

Platinum

Hello from Indiana.  Does anyone know if the audio player works with Chrome?  I have used IE in the past but mainly using Chrome now (duh).

Hello from Ayer, MA

Iron

@btwolfe: this one opens up a flash audio player when things start, usually right on time.

@rruther I will take your word for the 2:00 AM icon. I am usually sleeping then.

once in a blue.

Iron

Aloha JCheetham. How you, brah?

Platinum

@rruther2, I don't know how these gold/silver/platinum rankings are made.  Maybe our host can tell us.  I did contribute Gadget Freak #217 and #241 and maybe that has something to do with it.

Platinum

The audio bar replaces the box under the title. Press the play button when it appears.

Good evening from Iasi

@rruther2, Actually, as I now recall, Honolulu was no longer the paradise it once was. Joni Mitchell was right. They paved Honolulu into a parking lot -- and that's the highway to town.  As they say, call any place Paradise and it's gone.  To find Paradise there, you need to scuba dive or hike in the mountains.

lately, when it is colder than H there, the entire state

here is well above zero. I hear Hawaii is the healthiest state

of all, dunno Montana, never been there either.

Iron

Bring on the embedding.

Yo @irishmuse, what does silver mean as I hear IRON

means Information Rodio Online Network/Networks.

What do I need to do to go from IRON to GOLD ?

Hello from eastern MI

Iron

@FerTrujillo, NO, the audio does not start automatically.  You have to click on the audio bar that appears under the class title.  It appears exactly at the top of the hour (by my network clock set to an atomic clock).  If it does not appear, refresh your browser.  Use Chrome or Firefox.  IE does not work as well.

Thanks guys (;

let the Linux begin!

Iron

Hi all.  Yeah, the audio starts automatically.  But you get logged out automatically after several hours, so you'll need to log in again every day.

Iron

If I stayed logged in on the page the audio will start automatically, right?

Assuming there are no issues...

The streaming audio player will appear on this web page when the show starts at 2 PM Eastern time today. Note however that some companies block live audio streams. If when the show starts you don't hear any audio, try refreshing your browser. If that doesn't work, try using Firefox or Google Chrome as your browser. Some users experience audio interruptions with IE. If that doesn't work, the class will be archived immediately following our live taping.

Good Morning All!

Be sure to click 'Today's Slide Deck' under Special Educational Materials above right to download the PowerPoint for today's session.

Iron

Hi

I'm new to the embedded linux world and I'd like to know if this series is purely theorical or if we are going to use some sort of hardware tool to practice? If a tool is not going to be used in this series then, how easy will be to apply this to a choosen hardware tool from any vendor?

Thank you for the slides

Slides good

Iron

Can you upload Slice ahead  and anything else we might need. Dislike clases tha upload material one day before the event and involve hardware kits or software to download.

Iron

@Khem

I'm psyched about this course series!  I started with modifying Unix kernels at my first job at Bell Labs in the late 70's (ooooops, just dated myself) and have been meaning to get into embedded Linux for personal projects in the worst way.  Perhaps this course will provide the essential knowledge to bootstrap that effort.
