If you are using a Proficy Historian data collection and analysis system from GE Intelligent Platforms, you can log data from a View HMI to Machine Edition View Data Collector. A Collector is a central data collection node in a Historian system that gathers data from one or more data sources and sends it to a central Historian Server.

Yeah, I agree on that, atleast they would not have to worry about the sensitive capacitive touch.

Thanks Bobjengr. From my understanding, the touchscreen is a dumb terminal, effectively. But it can manage data from disparate sources -- as in data from the historian. So, assuming the plant has Six Sigma and CpK for processes, I would think the touchscreen could bring the data forward for viewing on the run.

Excellent post Rob.  Does the touch screen interface with individual discrete pieces of hardware to log data indicating trends?  If I read the article correctly this would be right.  I am also assuming there are statistical packages available to calculate Six Sigma and CpK for processes.  Is this correct?  Good information.

Actually, Taimoortariq, this touch screen is build robust. that's a good thing, since I would guess it sometimes gets balanced on a knee while the users fiddles with other controls. It better have strong drop resistance.

I agree with your point, Naperlou. As for historical data, it sounds like the device OS has a way to accommodate and present a feed from the historian.

Yes, I agree that will certainly help to store all the data and the satistics of the plant performances. Though concentrating all the essential data in one place makes it even more essential to have a reliable & secure system, specially when it would be having an access to the outside world.

It was a matter of time when touch panels and smart interfaces make their home in Automation Industry. And now its here. People might object though that it might have an affect on the robustness of the over all system in the harsh factory environment, but its hard to deny the advantages a good and interactive HMI can have to any production system

Rob, this is a good trend in devices.  GE has been in the forefront of the IoT.  What is not clear to me is the reference to historical data.  Is there something special in the device that does this?
