Yikes! $100 million on gthe controller? I guess this explains why games drive the computing market. As someone who never bought electronic games for my kids, I wouldn't have believed it.

So in a nutshell the software (games) also plays a very key role in the design of the controller.

Or should the design of the controller play a key role in the development of the software? I am not a gamer so I am assuming by your statement that there is backward compatibility from the previous Xbox? Future revisions of the games I would think would be released so that they are optimized for this $100M controller...which also adds to the proprietary effect of these types of designs which means more money from people who want to upgrade to the full capability of their systems - and I thought that problem only existed with PCs...

Human Factors in Design

Good article which describes how optimizing human factors in a design can be very complicated and challenging at times.  Even though the overall final design did not change significantly, I do recognize Microsoft's efforts for investing a large amount of money to try to ensure that their controller will be best in class.

the role of games on the controller

The feasibility of the controller also depends upon the type of game being played. For example I had a better gaming experience using Xbox controller for games like FIFA than first person shooter games.

Some features may work very well for a controller in a given situation and in other situation it might be totally unnecessary. For example the new touchpad for PS4 controller works well for certain functions, like selecting weapon modes in Killzone: Shadow Fall. But it proved a poor mouse substitute in Assassin's Creed 4's map screen, with slow, latency-prone movement.

So in a nutshell the software (games) also plays a very key role in the design of the controller.
