This type of "walking stick" has been proposed before, with optical sensors, but was quickly dropped when it was discovered that that big clunky white cane actually serves the very beneficial purpose of notifying others that the user is blind and they should stand clear or otherwise be careful around them.

This looks very cool.  But, I'd strongly suggest adding a strap to loop around the wrist, just like current canes. 

Many with sight impairment are older and don't have the dexterity or strength to hold onto a device for long periods of time.
