I think this is a really good idea. I know this idea of responsibility seems to be on the minds of researchers and those observing the scientific and technical fields more and more, and it will be good to have a forum for discussing what responsibility means and broaching topics that researchers themselves may have difficulty talking about.

I agree, Elizabeth. Perhaps the biggest chore the journal can do is to simply begin a discussion of what responsible innovation looks like.

"Responsible innovation represents an attempt to think through the ethical and social complexities of these technologies before they become mainstream" sounds like a much needed concept that would cross all disciplines and benefit society by encouraging intelligent and informed implementation of ideas. Often we plunge ahead with an idea without fully exploring its ramifications or understanding the full range of consequences that can occur and it seems to me that responsible innovation from its description is a start at curtailing what is often destructive behavior in the guise of progress...

That's a good explanation, Nancy. It goes along with the simple notion I once heard, that we have to remember we are responsible for any new object we introduce into the world.

If we are going to be creating a network that serves us, one of its most critical nodes will need to be ourselves. This is where wearable technology comes into play.
Researchers at the University of Maryland have achieved a first in lithium-ion battery science: the development of a successful lithium-based battery using one material for all three core components of a battery -- anode, cathode, and electrolyte.
The online Bar Steel Fatigue Database for automotive design engineers has been updated for the fifth time and now contains 134 iterations, or grade/process combinations. It provides better predictability for designing parts with long-term reliability and durability.
FPGAs use programmable fabric to create custom logic, but this flexibility comes at a cost -- usually around 10 times more silicon real estate and 10 times the power dissipation. Can we really claim any FPGA is low power?
