Yes, Chuck, amazing growth. I think we've seen this type of growth recently with smart phones. Thanks to Apple, the shift to smart phones was nearly instant. Of course, Google's Android helped fuel the growth. 3D printing, though, may be more remarkable, since it's new technology.
The minimum maintenance feature really caught my eye. As 3D printers become more and more pervasive for small businesses and hobbyists, minimum maintenance and ease of use will be key. This particular printer appears to have both of these.
If these printers are as good as the current technology and the price stays at $2200, there could be even more sales than 65,000 by 2018? The price tag is right in my range and I know there's at least 10 other people I can name who would consider buying one for that price. Hope it works with Solidworks.
Two things I'd like to see improve:
(1) better resolution on the finished product
(2) bigger build envelope, like the size of a small tool box (30-40 cm in length)
Nice article, Cabe. I love that stat: 65,000 personal 3D ;printers will be sold in 2013. That's great. It will just grow from here as prices come down and the printers become more versatile. I wonder if most of those printers print chocolate objects.
