Yes, I remember hearing about an EE prof being asked what a good A/D and D/A combination would be to take an analog signal and double the amplitude. They wanted to digitize it, multiply by 2 with a micro and convert back to analog.

The advantages of 'dumb terminals' in a disttibuted system are ease of use and dedication. But, of course, everyone scoffed. Now Sun's vision is becoming a reality.
