Yes, the color accuracy and the level of detail are really impressive, woodla. I was convinced that was a photo of a real person.

Now if they had a life size statue of me at my desk (with perhaps a small movement once in a while), I wonder how long before someone stops in my cubicle and notices?

Another market is wives who want their husbands to place statues of themselves on their desk. Sort of a "stake their ground" approach ;-)

I'm impressed with the color accuracy.  They must be hand painted.

I don't think this technology can print so many different color details.

Any other ideas?

Oh yes, J. Williams, it's narcissistic all right -- a little mini-me for the desk. You'd have to have a pretty positive self image. If I had an image of myself close by, it would just seem creepy.

That's right MrDon. It seems logical to make these avatars out of durable materials, especially since there seems to be a wide choice of materials for 3D printing. Maybe I'm missing something.

What's wrong with a photograph?  It all seems somehow narcissistic.

Yes, Chuck, and it could be you standing there. For the price of a cheap used car, you could have a statue of yourself standing on your desk as you work all day.

TJ, take a look at this app that's available from Autodesk. It produces a 3D object file from multiple photos, and is free. Of course, having the object 3D printed costs something.

Obviously this does have all kinds of potential. At the 6-inch size, it would be interesting to see the level of detail for the money.
