The failure modes that I am aware of are short circuits and leakage to the frame, short circuited turns, and winding opens. Leakage is not that hard to detect, shorted turns would be easily found by the impulse, or inductive ringing tests, and winding opens are easily detected with an ohm meter. Locating the actual fault in order to repair it is a lot more challenging though. Then there are other faults, such as bearing noise and loss of balance, which are also problems but sa bigger challenge to detect electrically.
