@Critic – yes repairing a microwave without the warranty could make you spend a large amount, it's better to buy a new one.

@Critic – I too think looking for comments on the internet is the best way before deciding on what product you want to buy. User reviews always helps immensely.

OMG!  An oven that retains the odor of the food last cooked in it?  That's horrible!

@Critic - That's the most horrible thing you could ever expect from the manufacturer.

It is also a little sad to have to depend on reviews...in the old days we bought based on a company name and knew it would be a good because our decision was based on a company's reputation which they worked hard to keep. If there was a problem - they would work hard to resolve it - not just provide an automated customer helpline that transfers the caller offshore. Seems like quality and customer service have been sacrificed to the altar of cheaper prices and bigger profit margins.

@Larry – Which means there was a manufacturing defect on the tires you brought initially. Defects are all around us and we need to be really careful when making a purchase.

@Nancy – Yes as you said the best way to make the decision is to check the reviews first, so that we understand what other users faced using the same product. And don't forget to leave your own connect on the product once you buy it.

@Charles – I think no one could predict how long equipment would work. The only option left is for us to read the product reviews before we make the purchase.

@Ann- What ? you used it just for a week??? I wonder what's wrong with these manufacturers, why can't they manufacture a good product with a good lifetime.  After all, these are all durable goods which are meant to be used at least for 3 years.

@rmorris - I am just wondering if their objective is to manufacture low cost products or give the best products to the customer. I think they are diving to cut costs, hence they cut costs for testing and use low quality components.

@Rob – I don't think these products were tested, other than some random samples. That's the reason users find these manufacture defects on these equipment.
