This is a good way to enhance the existing technology.  As you note, new battery chemistry may be a while off.  It would be interesting to see it retrofitted in various devices as well.

As we await the invention of a bettery battery--which could take awhile to come to the commercial market, despite researchers' best efforts--technology like TI's can help designers improve and stretch the life of existing batteries.
