I would be interested to know how much specialized hardware is devoted to safety features, versus advanced software solutions.

You're all right that safety isn't just an option anymore, and it seems like manufacturers are well aware of this fact and supporting this trend. Rockwell also just came out with some tools to help engineers navigate safety as they are designing machines: http://www.designnews.com/document.asp?doc_id=262277

These sort of safety features and addition of ethernet port is an addon feature .However all new devices being developed these days have such sort of features.

Rockwell Automation has built this sort of safety control into all of its new drive families.  It's no longer an option card as with the previous generation.

Will be interesting to see if this becomes a trend, with other automation suppliers also adding safety features to drives. Maybe not for those with strong machine controller line of products?
