Currently, you can find oximeters at WalMart for about $40.  One of the fastest growing product categories in the action sports market is fit tech.  It's been bubbling up at CES and OutDoorRetailer for years.

With bluetooth capabilty, it would be good if this device can be used with Nike+ or Fitbit.

I like the Bluetooh connectivity and expect to see more of these types of devices in the future.  Good strategy to allow it to communicate with your smartphone.

Being open-source take a lot of pressure off of product developers, the public take over as the developer. Although that tends to be a slow moving machine, plenty has come from it. Just take Linux as the premium example.

I am not a big fan of Bluetooth. I found it to be rather susceptible to electrical noise. I suppose this isn't a life critical application, so it doesn't matter much.

If you stick to just a sports product, you will have to be carefull not to make any medical claims in all your product litterature... including in your PR....

About a year ago I bought a Contec model CMS50E Pulse Oximeter for about $80.

Not only does the device read and display one's oxygen blood level,

but it also displays one's pulse reading

as well as one's pulse waveform on a time graph - handy for displaying an irregular heartbeat.

The USB connection is used to recharge its battery and also download data to your PC.

Its color OLED display is most impressive.

Prototypes should predict the future not rehash the past.

Thoudayer,

Thanks for the links. Time will tell how closely this Bluetooth oximeter follows the guidelines.

Cookiejar,

Your prior experience definitely puts this meter into a different perspective. It seems like a truly innovative product.
