A good story but missing some details.

Presumably the failure mode of the comptuer was EMI or voltage spikes?  They must have been pretty bad to cause it to crash.  How bad were they?

When I was in technical school years ago, they had a similar problem that took a while to track down.


The telephone system used to crash with some regularity, but it was finally traced to the grills in the cafeteria being turned on!

This is indeed a rare one.  I have heard of people having problems with power, but it is generally with the power company.  To have another user cause this type of problem is interesting.

Years ago (decades) there were routine brown outs.  This is when the voltage is lowered intentionally.  This caused a lot of computer equipment to malfunction.  Things are better now.

I would never think that something as innocuous as a lit-up billboard could cause a computer issue. Clever problem solving!
