Now that you have introduced the ZigBee Stack functions well enough ... are there application level programs available for larger network applications where a PC can connect to the Network Coordinator to take data from the network from the coordinator, accumulate and organize and analyze network information as well as being able to know physical location of logical node ...
also for diagnostics (e.g. something similar to CAN_Alyzer if you are familiar with the CAN bus)
Again, since this is a review of the archived presentation, I will / am researching these issues ... but for possible inclusion or mention in future presentations it may help ...
Commissioning, Monitoring and Diagnostics are of interest now that the groundwork has been laid out in the first four presentations. It seems as if some capabilities or features might be difficult apart from the enhancements of ZigBee Pro.
Glad that the lectures can be kept to less than an hour ... and very glad that these are archived lectures -- very helpful to be able to stop, research, review ...
Thanks all for attending!!! Your feedback is very helpful! Join us tomorrow as we wrap up this week. Thanks to Rob and Design News and Digi-Key for making these happen. See you tomorrow!!!
I sympathize with the comment that this is too complicated for someone's app - it is in some cases. Over 80% of my designs have NOT been actual ZigBee. about 30% were not even 802.15.4 but used the phy and LL built into the silicon. Example, simple monitoring or control.
Anatoliy, you ask a great question. There is no one best answer. I have standardized to one mfr for new designs just to simplify what I have to stay current (and pay to maintain!) Being an old Moto guy, I use Freescale but also work in Microchip, TI, and Renesas. I teach my hands-on classes with Freescale.
The effective throughput through a router or coordinator does depend on the # of nodes. Picture a toll booth - takes longer to get through, even with an EZ-Pass, because everyone has to go through those few lanes
I guess my questions are for Friday: Can we get some insight about Zigbee vendors and their pros and cons? Also would be good to know about testing and debugging tools that associated with vendors or third parties and their pros and cons? What dev kits are recomended to learn Zigbee in more details?
Many nodes and modules can handle lots of great apps. DMX (I love working with that) is one case. voice over 802.15.4, sure. We have streamed low-resolution mp3s. If you have to, you have to. But like was said, you are hauling gravel with a Civic (actually, in my case, in the back of a Jeep Cherokee!)
OK! Coffee in hand - First to JSP - the coordinator throughput is much closer to the full 250kbps, but with all of the nodes speaking, a single node may only see 20-30kbps.
Can we do Voice over ZigBee if the message is very brief -- e.g., "Press OK to start." Or is that best handed off to another device using a switch activation?
78RPM: Voice over ZigBee is a misuse of the technology. Can you haul gravel with a Honda Civic? Yes, but it's not built for that. You'd be better off just using ZigBee to trigger pre-recorded messages that live on the end-node.
If the audio is not working after you refresh your browser, you can play the program back after it's archived. It ill be archived as soon as the audio program is finished.
Getting a lot of work done with week, with most people already gone or holed up like me trying to get everything finished before the holidays. Looking forward to another great class with Charles.
-The streaming audio player will appear on this web page when the show starts at 2pm eastern today. Note however that some companies block live audio streams. If when the show starts you don't hear any audio, try refreshing your browser.
By experimenting with the photovoltaic reaction in solar cells, researchers at MIT have made a breakthrough in energy efficiency that significantly pushes the boundaries of current commercial cells on the market.
In a world that's going green, industrial operations have a problem: Their processes involve materials that are potentially toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive. If improperly managed, this can precipitate dangerous health and environmental consequences.
With LEDs dropping in price virtually every year, automakers have begun employing them, not only on luxury vehicles, but on entry-level models, as well.

A quick look into the merger of two powerhouse 3D printing OEMs and the new leader in rapid prototyping solutions, Stratasys. The industrial revolution is now led by 3D printing and engineers are given the opportunity to fully maximize their design capabilities, reduce their time-to-market and functionally test prototypes cheaper, faster and easier. Bruce Bradshaw, Director of Marketing in North America, will explore the large product offering and variety of materials that will help CAD designers articulate their product design with actual, physical prototypes. This broadcast will dive deep into technical information including application specific stories from real world customers and their experiences with 3D printing. 3D Printing is
