ready for another great session

@Ann - LiPo batteries, several days

Iron

Great to have access to the recorded sessions

Iron

Missed the live lecture

Iron

Thanks Paul; this lecture was very informative

Iron

Using Tadiran Li Batteries. Our required battery lig=fe is greater than 10 years.  We are currently acheiving that life on a cell phone based data system.

Iron

Thanks for the talk, hope to hear more tomorrow.

Iron

I will be signing off now.  Thanks for listening

and see you tomorrow.

Paul.

Blogger

yes it is pretty impressive - even get time charts.

Iron

My friend Garet just showed me the Wifi

Andoid App - wow its really good.

Blogger

The Wifi analyzer is a good idea, I still think that our

lab spectrum analyzer will give clear and accurate power

and bandwidth figures too.

Blogger

@csobchuk - awesome, downloading now

Iron

Super, thanks. When we're closer to launch I'll give you a shout.

Iron

@pauln, @apdobaj - the one I use is simply called WiFi Analyzer by Kevin Yuan, it is available on the google play site for free. I find it very useful for debugging friends wifi issues.

Iron

@apdobj

We've worked alot with flex circuits.

Blogger

@JP_TI

I don't know of studies off-hand that reference the

coexistance of 802.15.4 and 802.11, however I believe

the standard itself speaks to these points at the end or

in the appendix - take a look there as a starting point.

Blogger

As far as form and fit, do you folks have any experience with flex circuitry?

Iron

Android Wifi Analyzer,

That is VERY COOL - Great idea.!.!.!

Blogger

Moving Wifi to 5GHz is one way to make the Wifi

work - perhaps the microwave oven should be repaired or

replaced first however.

Regards the Blue Tooth Question, we do do custom designs

in this area.  You can reach me though email

Blogger

@csobchuk - thanks, great suggestions. Android wifi analyzer, how cool is that?

Iron

whew, that's a relief! At Orchid do you do custom design for bluetooth?

Iron

Path Loss Equation:  I will clarify that

tomorrow.

Blogger

@apdobaj, several things to solve your issue.

Firstheck the microwave seal - there are some monitors that provide this information to determine if it is still good or not.

If it is then proceed below.
1) if you have an android or ios device - use one of their WiFi analyzers to see where your microwave oven is transmitting (microwave has to be on)

2) if it is transmitting on the lower or upper channels, you can simply go in to the router/access point configuration and change the channel to one that is not impacted. This usually can fix the problem.

3) if you can't do that, you can check to see if your wifi devices support the 5GHz range and change the router/access point to use that band.

Iron

No its not ionizing, it heats through

jiggling the water molecules which are

resonant at that frequency

Blogger

I checked the equation for path loss. I believe it is 10Log (lamda/4piD)squared. This equation appears to agree with the chart on slide 7

Iron

is that frequency of radiation ionizing (at sufficient power)?

Iron

@apdobaj

Wifi getting clobbered by microwave.  Hmmm, that makes me wonder.

You microwave should not be leaking that much.  I have been meaning

for a long time now to bring our lab spectrum analyzer home to sniff our

microwave oven... I've not done that yet, but our oven does not clobber

our Wifi.  Hmmmm....  Don't stand to close to it!

Blogger

uC: Microchip, NXP, even a Picaxe!

Very Helpful Info -- thanks

Iron

"I captured the picture and sent it to the Google pic identifier."

Another lesson.

Iron

Budget is like listing all you expenses and incomes(gains and losses). Margin is the line in your budget were you say how much cash you will keep on hand( how much more signal than the minimum)

Iron

Slide 19 -- that computer looks fairly modern to me... ;-)

Iron

my wifi gets clobbered by my microwave in proximity to the kitchen. Is this common? should I be worried? what can I do about it?

Iron

@gvictorine

Well technology is an amazing thing.  We have radios that

took up rooms fitting in less than the size of a penny.  And

we have google image searches.... You get the sparkie... consider

yourself annointed.

Blogger

@csobchuk - thanks!

Iron

@gvictorine - that's not cheating - that is simply being resourceful

Iron

Tx and Rx current are actually not exactly

the same.  Tx current is usually a bit hight,

unless one may be transmitting with lower

power on purpose.

Blogger

I captured the picture and sent it to the Google pic identifier. I admit it was cheating.

Iron

@apdobaj - typically margin is the amount of headroom you have in your budget.

Iron

Betcha we are going to have Heddy Lamar as a pic qiz.

Iron

Who is Ed Armstrong?

Iron

margin and budget

yes I think those terms could be used interchanably

Blogger

He must be Frank S, but not sure about the lady's name

Iron

@gvictorine

YES - How did you know!!??  It is Edwin Howard Armstrong

and his wife Marion on their honeymoon in 1923 in miami.

How did you know?

Blogger

thanks a lot. great info.

You used the term "margin", is that the same as "budget"?

Iron

@JP_TI - it is noise from a source. You need to know the distance between the source and victim and the source transmit EIRP

Iron

Paul thank you for another very informative session.

Iron

Edwin Armstrong and wife?

Iron

ATMega2561 with a Spartan-6

Iron

We are using the Atmel AVR 8 bit controllers for our battery powered sensors

Iron

You say that 802.11 signals effectively raise noise floor for a 802.15 system.  Do you know of any studies or references on this that quantify this effect?  Thanks.

Iron

MSP430 with TI radio card

Iron

Today's next audience question is
What microcontroller are you working with in your application?

Blogger

CR2032 battery, a button cell lithium battery rated at 3.0 volts

Iron

No idea.  But Marconit and his wife is a good guess.

Iron

Marconi and his wife

Iron

Today's next audience question is
Can anyone identify the two people in the photograph in slide 14?

Blogger

NiMH, LiFePO4 and Li Cobalt

Depending on application, some devices have 16 hour battery life requirements and other up to several months.

In non-rechargeable applications (Li primary cells) we have products with 2-3 years of battery life.

our products operate from vehicle battery/electrical power. life is not an issue.

Iron

I believe that receiving in these systems involves a lot of digital signal processing, which might be where the power goes.  But again, I'm just a software guy...

Iron

Most designers I am talking with are using CR2032's.

Lead acid in prototype for storage, but basicly solar-powered.

Iron

both coordinator and end points are mains powered

Iron

typically use CR2450 and want >> 3 year

Iron

Using a Lithium-ION cells, my application requires 8+ hours up

Iron

Here for general learning. Don't have any specifics to provide on battery life yet.

Iron

we are using lithium primary cells for cold weather operation for a 50 day battery life

Iron

Various battery types according to the device. We can go from 18 days for one and 18mos for another

Iron

I'm surprised the current requirements are the same for both RX and TX.  Isn't RX usually lower?

Iron

Not using any battery powered devices at this time (except for dev/testing)

Iron

Today's first audience question is
For those of you who are working with battery powered applications, what battery types are you using and how long of a service life does your application require?

Blogger

I found on Firefox that the audio bar appears but doesn't start automatically.  I have to click the Play button.

Iron

I have tried both Windows Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, also updated Adobe Flash, and still not audio. Looks like they need some good IT engineering to review this audio reliability situation.

Iron

question: path loss in dB is linear with D, why we have the knee

Iron

Test audio a few minutes before the lecture would be helpful.

Iron

is "margin" the same as "budget"?

Iron

After trying the refresh and pressing Play unsuccessfully, try using another browser.  Just a stab.

Platinum

i had to reload the page before audio worked, go ahead and try it.

Iron

I have no audio either.

Audio worked for me during yesterdays lecture but not today nor on Tuesday.

Audio problems seems to be a common complaint posted on this blog, and lecture audio is proving to not be reliable.

Iron

csobchuk, refresh your browser window and when you get the audio bar, press the Play button.

Platinum

Didn't have audio either and after a browser refresh and a couple of clicks of the play button, finally got audio.

don't know if they were running late or not, but i reloaded the page and got the audio bar.

Iron

running late? i have no audio yet.

Iron
