I can get behind the smartmotor concept. Having to reinvent, re-engineer, common designs should be a thing of the past. The countless interface panels I designed wiring for is the core of my belief. It's 2012, time to move on.
Though I do question Animatics decision to place the driver circuits at the motor. The intense electric fields produced by the steppers or servos can't be good for signal fidelity. Why stop there.. remove all lines and send the signal wirelessly.
