In slide 11, the wave form in and the out wave aren't the same. Hopefully if the double conversion is performed correctly, they would be the same. Or is this just an illustration and isn't meant to be scaled, etc. I would also think it would be more complex to design a DAC than a ADC. Yes/no?
I just purchased a sound card oscilloscope probe for 25.00 on ebay I'm hoping to use it to look closer at a simple RC circuit for picking the right capacitor
I'm an electronic engineer but make my living with programming interfacing with embeded systems. I'm moving into learning arduino functionality and am building a stronger foundation.
Thanks Max! I like your approach! It seems that you could add more beef to these segments - you have our interest and then you drop us off - like watching a TV show that ends with a clif hanger! Please request more time, and I was unable to see information in the window. I clixked on HTML and still could not see. I'll update my Flash player and see if that helps. See you tomorrow and thanks again. HCH
Still updating -- I think we'll leave the rest until tomorrow -- thansk everyone for (a) attending and (b) the kind words -- C U tomorrow -- B there or B square :-)
I'm really sorry about this -- now I'm up to th emessages saying what everyine is doing, like looking for a refresher course or being a student -- this could take ages before I'm caught up -- I think we'll have to leave it until tomorrow -- so if you have any questions from today's course -- post them here and I'll read them later and i'll try to answer them tomorrow
Ah ... now I'm seeing the message from folks saying that they are seeing the first image I put up -- give me strength!!!
how to track the low frequency signal(15 to 30 Hz) from beneath the ground surface accurately?
We use pig transmitters that emit low frequency signals and a receiver is supposed to accurately track that signal but our receiver catches any undesired low frequency signal which is not necessarily the one from the transmitter. What is the ideal way to get rid of this problem?
The analog Computers that I've worked with used a transistorized chopper drive circuit to sample the input signal before either differentiation or integration signal conditioning, or processing.
Time to go..see you tomorrow.......................................................................................................................................................
@You will have to be patient with me -- I lost my broswer and now I'm back it's refreshing every message ... one ... at .... a ... time .... it's painfully slow -- I'm still seeing the oribginal ones saying "hi" -- give me a minute or two ...
How does band width of MSO relate to clock speed of mpu or mcu in sut? e.g. if using an mcu at 100MHz, what is the minimum bandwidth mso i can use to get a clear picture of what's happening in the overall device? Thanks.
I just messed up my browser and lost all the messages -- re th eperson who can;t see that analog computer (or any of the images) -- email me directly at max@clivemaxfield.com and I'll email you back the image
@"I saw one for sale a couple of months ago. $65K"
You are kidding me! That must have been one from the second world war -- mine is post-war (they were used by companies to encrypt messages for at least 10 years after the war)
Re the $50 logic analyzer -- thsi is FPGA-based -- remind me on that day (I think we're doing thsi on Thursday) and I'll get you a link to their website

Garbage In, Garbage Out (re: I have a temperature to voltage converter which is an unstable analog signal, question is how do we convert that to a stable digital signal?)
Not expensive at all! Go look at the cost of any half decent osc.! I personally purchased an academic grade osc. for the Apple two in 1984, and it cost me US$750!
@luizcosta: thanks for the info! :) I'm just remembering my physics course which attempted to be taught as both Algebraic-based and Calculus-based at the same time, and certain things seemed better fit to one or the other...
@JOSEPH: I beg to disagree with the analogy, for in both worlds of analog and digital (continuous and discrete math) algebra and calculus are equally applied.
dont confuse analog or early computers with OEM (off line electronic machines) which processed punched cards. a different machine for different functions such as: sorting, printing, merging, calculating
I'm sitting in because Max is so entertaining. My professional carreer in electronics began in the 70's with tubes (valves for Max). tubes. Have been designing analog, digital and embedded control systems.
i'm a software guy who did hardware 30 years ago when in the us navy and immediately thereafter. i'm getting back into hardware largely because of the arduino. i
I'm a Corp. Comm. Specialist (public relations) and routinely write press releases about electronic components. Definitely learning for the first time.
@rick.curl - email at jl@jlbsystems.net send now and I will respond. I have been able to capture these audio files from the archive using IE 8. not sure about other browsers.
I listened to it again at least twice after work because I was unable to take notes and keep up with the live stream, so today I will just listen and try to absorb as much as I can live, but tonight will really get into it.
The streaming audio player will appear on this web page when the show starts at 2pm ET. Note that some companies block live audio streams. If you're not hearing audio after 2:00, try refreshing your browser. It should be fine on IE, Firefox, or Chrome.
Andrew Morris designed a circuit that could detect a stroke victim's groan and convert the sound into a signal so caregivers would know when help was needed.
New disc magnet motors fit into the design trend of stepping up to closed loop performance while maintaining the cost advantage of stepper motor technology.
At the Design News webinar on June 27, learn all about aluminum extrusion: designing the right shape so it costs the least, is simplest to manufacture, and best fits the application's structural requirements.
On April 21, NASA launched a novel project, putting into orbit three satellites that employ an off-the-shelf commercial smartphone as the control system.

Early in my career, I worked as a draftsman and remember the days of drawing on vellum with numbered pencils and Mylar with plastic lead. This was a fun experience in the sense that I ...
I've been using workstations for more than 10 years and love finding ways to get more performance from my system. With demanding professional applications that require more power each ...
A lasting memory from my first job as an engineer in an auto assembly plant is standing on hard concrete at six in the morning, vending-machine coffee clutched in hand, listening to ...
For industrial control applications, or even a simple assembly line, that machine can go almost 24/7 without a break. But what happens when the task is a little more complex? That’s where the “smart” machine would come in. The smart machine is one that has some simple (or complex in some cases) processing capability to be able to adapt to changing conditions. Such machines are suited for a host of applications, including automotive, aerospace, defense, medical, computers and electronics, telecommunications, consumer goods, and so on. This radio show will show what’s possible with smart machines, and what tradeoffs need to be made to implement such a solution.
