CAD is important and so is the software

The open source Computer Aided Design programs like Googls Sketchup will help people understand the basics of developing conceptuals using a personal computer.

In part understanding the software and how the software communicates with the hardware is a very important step, 3D drafting and drawing is just a small peice of the puzzle.

Three things that a person has to understand before really going anywhere with robotics or computer numeric control include; Drafting, Programming, and Mechanics.

Thanks to this initiative the CAD end is covered, here is the software end..

For a 3D DIY printer like the RepRap try http://whatisacnc.com/sprinter/  and for a really good open source 3 axis Mill and Lathe CAM software try http://www.cnclinux.com for the EMC program. EMC runs as a full operating system under the Ubuntu platform.
