Good presentation -- hybrid apps (e.g. projector) are very interesting ... good potentials for Health applications ... would like to hear more about gas and particle sensors in terms of physics -- data sheets and app notes seem to be around
Using the BOSCH pressure sensors for correction of the noise collection systems. Doing LFN (Infrasound) systems. Accurate pressure sensors -- easy to use if you develop a library function which hides the details.
Re. question from Alex - just looked through the MEMS microphones datasheets... quite interesting - digital output directly from the microphone makes things much easier...
@luizcosta - I don't know how to reply to another forum member. I've wondered and tried to figure out the same thing. One member recommended a book to me, and I purchased the book that same day. It was a good recommendation, and I wanted to thank them, but I had no way of reaching them. I've not seen a posting on the forum since then, so I couldn't thank them during a session. :.(

ALISSA: if you're still there can you tell me why there is so much limitation with iPhone compass. It seems that most of the time there is EMI blocking the functionality of the app.
@luizcosta - Sorry to see you're having problems. It's happened to others as well, including me. Probably the best recovery you can do is note the approximate time of thread loss and the approximate time of reconnection. Then come back after the session is over and play back specifically those time windows.
Some questions about magnetometers: I'm not too familiar with them, but if you look at the manufacturer's spec sheets, they will usually list the sensing method. Not all magnetometers are MEMS.
@luizcosta: to start a garage size MEMS factory to build simple MEMS, if you bought used equipment and had some really great maintenance guys would cost ~ $5M. That's just to build it. Then plan on several million a year for power, water, specialty gases and consumables. Building a MEMS factory that could do gyros, etc. would cost about $50M. But you don't need to build a MEMS garage...many universities allow external companies to rent time in their clean room. Check out schools in the "NNIN" - a nanofabrication network - like Stanford, Cornell, Georgia Tech, UCSB. Save your money for something else!
@dplmark: MEMS are used in some hearing aids. There are some companies working on MEMS speakers, but the challenge is that the MEMS membrane is very small (<1mm) - it's hard to drive a lot of air (i.e. sound volume) with such a small membrane. One approach is to create an array of MEMS speakers for close listening range apps.
ALISSA: What would be the approximate minimum budget to start a "garage size" MEMS factory? Alternatively, an evaluation lab to refine manufacturer's specifications?
@ebloohm: there are MEMS sensors for measuring pH, conductivity, etc. I can't recall the manufacturer names, but the Abbott iSTAT blood analysis chip contains MEMS devices that can measure those items.
@Lawson: DLPs go into TVS as well as projectors. TI is the #1 MEMS supplier by $$ because the DLP is an expensive chip, >$100 whereas most other consumer MEMS devices cost <$3. I can't recall if TI makes any MEMS other than DLP.
ALISSA: iPhones to me became 95+% impressive. However, I personally struggle using the iPhone compass. It seem there is a lot of sensitivity with radio/cell tower EMI. Can you elaborate on that problem and what solutions are out there?
@Alissa Does TI make any MEMS other than DLP? The slide you showed the first day had TI as the #1 MEMS supplier. Do the DLP MEMS chips go in the DLP TVs as well as projectors? Does each device need a lot of MEMS? Wondering why TI has the highest MEMS revenue.
Speaking of frosty beers, those of you with iPhones might want to check out the "iBeer" app. I'd have to say it's the most frivolous use of MEMS technology I've seen yet!
@mrgilbert: there are some MEMS development boards out there - can't recall too many names at the moment, but I believe Colibrys offers some. Crossbow used to, but not sure they still do. STMicro has their iNEMO platform as well - I'll talk about that one tomorrow.
What about cost for tracking when meds have been taken (Im in pain management) where they watch very closely, this could be a boon to Drs for compliance

Impressed: There is an explosion of power measuring devices for cycling. SRM, Quarq, PowerTap, just to name a few. Everyone I know (including me) has one. Garmin is also making a version that fits inside the spindle of a pedal.

Hillbilly...Same issues here in the CA Central Valley. 90mi east of Silicon Valley and we've got Big Ag, Big Logistics, Light mfg, Real Estate and the supporting trades...Brain Drain.
