In a previous engineering activity I was with a group that talked a lot about trade-off studies, or trades, as we called them. This article discusses a lot of interesting trades-offs that can be considered in designing and using electric motors. It really brings home the optimization problem in engineering. The number of variables makes this somewhat complex, and one never really gets to an optimal solution. The best one can do is to solve the problem at hand within the environment that exists today.
