What are the applications for a 4 X 4 mm ASIC package that incorporates a three-axis accelerometer wire bonded to a three-axis gyroscope? Why would anyone need that kind of size combined with that kind of capability?

MEMS gyroscopes a major breakthrough

I find the idea of MEMS gyroscopes both amazing and a really important breakthrough. For one thing, they're behind the unusual abilities of the Japanese flying robot sphere I wrote about:

"On the ground, on another surface, or in the air, if it runs into an object and gets jostled, the sphere can right itself and keep flying via its three on-board gyro sensors."
