What applications are best served by having a regenerative drive?

Craig:  Drives that cycle (start/stop) often and drives that used where loads cause the motor to generate (crane hoist, elevator, unwinder) are prime targets

Do newer drives have a longer life expectancy?     what's the payback -how long untill ROI = upfront cost?

Craig:  From the early 90"s the dependability of AC drives has increased and now they are at a very high level.  Keeping your drives cool and not cycling power has always been two factors to increase the life expectancy of any drive or electronics equipment in general.

I had a quick look online for a Siemens ROI calculator and didn't see one. Is there an excel version that we can get?

Craig: please try this link

Hello and thanks for everyone who attended.

I will start answering now

What are the drive duty transformer requirements associated with these drives you are discussing?

Craig:  With an Active Front End drive the "K" factor of the transformer is less of an issue due to lower harmonics

I believe you said that Servo-motors are more efficienct that induction motors. Barring cost, can Servo-motors be used as a replacement in most applications. (I understand that you need to change the driver as well).

Craig:  There are some universities doing comparison studies on this to test both technologies on the same load.  The servo motor is more efficient but the application will make a difference in what the exact payback will be.

Bart Bartolucci again.  with the more energy efficient IGBT drives (VFDs), are the output voltages still as high as 2 to 3 times VBUS, as the older drives.

Craig: The reverse voltage has not changed much but typically with long motor cable lenghts there will still be standing waves.

Are high efficiency VFD's more likely to cause bearing failure,  -what, if any, measures have you taken to prevent this?

Craig: Common mode currents can be caused by acouple factors but there are no additional factors in efficient VFD's over standard

What is a good VFD specification for 40 HP VFD requirements and up?

Craig:  Not clear what type of specification you are looking for.  There are IEEE specifications for topics like harmonics or motor efficiency

Can you point me to some user groups where I can learn more about energy efficient motors?

Craig: We have a Siemens user group I can put you in touch with and also a forum on our Service & Support site.  IEEE is also a good source of information

Bart Bartolucci of the Okonite Company.  what improvements in the drives have been made to reduce common mode currents.  our understanding is that a symmetrical power cable; ie 3 power conductors and 3 grounds under a common metallic sheath is best for this.  has anything changed regarding this design concept.

For industrial control applications, or even a simple assembly line, that machine can go almost 24/7 without a break. But what happens when the task is a little more complex? That’s where the “smart” machine would come in. The smart machine is one that has some simple (or complex in some cases) processing capability to be able to adapt to changing conditions. Such machines are suited for a host of applications, including automotive, aerospace, defense, medical, computers and electronics, telecommunications, consumer goods, and so on. This radio show will show what’s possible with smart machines, and what tradeoffs need to be made to implement such a solution.
