So the error was only an error on a manufacturing and theoretical level, but practically speaking there was no problem, right?

My guess is you happened to be in the right place at the right time to benefit from that goof up. We've purchased faulty products over the years (not necessarily electronics or applicances, though) and my husband was able to figure out some sort of workaround. Doesn't detract from the annoyance factor, however, that when you purchase a product, you expect that it comes to you as represented.
