I literally registered on this site jUsT to make this post.
We got a ton of the Big Belly compactors all over Philadelphia a couple years back. (Good idea on paper maYbE BUT people should know the problems.)
a: I'd like to see whAT kind of trash is being used to actually get the 5x compression data.
b: In Actual use..It is the biGGest pain to have to use BOTH hands to stop and throw out the smallest piece of trash.
c: Oh great noW you have to actually TOUCH the trashcan..some of the handles are actually pretty icky
d: TrY try TRY to throw out anything like a pizzabox
e: Basically it's also kind of SCARY throwing out trash because it's like mailing a letter...if you toss something in and realize you threw in the wrong bag or "holy crap i forgot my pda was in there!!"...you're screwed (AND it gets Compressed!) (OR Literally you're going to have to go get your friend barney-rubble and lower him in head first by his feet to see if he can .. oh nevermind ..oldguy reference)
f: I can't tell you how many times you go to Open one of these and they're jammed up from too much trash inside.
g: There's Piles of trash Next to these ALL The Time!!
h: My take on the economy is that the types of jobs these take away are the very jobs we should be Protecting anyways! (I though Trash collection was the onE of the feW careers people were supposed to depend on being able to have) (now it seems like theres 4 people trying to keep up with the entire city..AND they don't hire enough people so the trash cans don't jam-and-overflow!..they hire enough people so they only oveRfloW the Same Amount As Before!)
so to recap.. You're walking home from the grocery store in the rain..you want to throw out a small bag of trash from the car..you have to put your bags down..in front of an icky trashcan so you have the hands free to Grab the handle..wet wet wet..is that gum? is thAt pee?ewww...GHAGH JAMMED AnywayS!...pick back up the wet bags...try this one with your knee to hold it open...fwOOMP over go your groceries all into thAT puddle.. at least got the bag thrown out WhEW (mild success!)..you get upstairs to the apt. and realize you still have your bag of trash ..CRAP what was thAT that I threw out!!?? (and you can fill in the answer there..with me it's always potentially the camera i'm keeping dry or a jumpdrive I just bought)
That's an interesting video/concept. I've never seen one before.
I know a man from PA who had a pickup truck. One day he informed me that he would find all kinds of trash in his truck bed. Why? Glad you asked. Because people would throw their trash in his truck bed instead of the nearest trash can. I found that to be odd.
Worst video quality I have seen in a while. But hey, this video is from 2008.
Great concept. I wonder how it has turned out... Just checked.
Since then, they have won many awards and expanded to many new locations. There are over 15,000 stations placed. At $5000+ dollars for each compactor, do the math. They are doing great.
We looked at a number of sources to determine this year's greenest cars, from KBB to automotive trade magazines to environmental organizations. These 14 cars emerged as being great at either stretching fuel or reducing carbon footprint.
Researchers at MIT and Sandia National Labs have observed a reaction in lithium-air batteries that could help improve the design of these cells for electric vehicles and other applications.
Healthcare might seem to be an unlikely target application for the Internet of Things technology, but recent developments show small ways that big-data is going to make an impact on patient care moving into the future.
