The only problem I ever had with my '67 fastback Mustang (390 CU) was overheating. The factory built this beast. That does not mean parts were not broken on a regular basis. My father blamed all the broken parts on the loose nut behind the steering wheel.
The package was not anywhere near 30 years old when the exhaust system fell off! That was a short time after buying it, when it was not that old and not that many miles.
I also have blown an exhaust system off a car, but that was a completely standard setup, which had gotten weak, and I did stomp on the gas. It really did startle the old lady next to me. It startled me also.
My recollection of the Shelby Mustang package was that it was easy to spot because it was different looking. I don't recall just what was different, but while it was indeed a hot setup, I would not call it a "sleeper". It was a nice and fast way to attract the attention of our local speed limit enforcement team members, as I recall.
Wake Up, a very low mileage original 67 MUSTANG is Money-In-The-Bank. You Sir have a Jerry Rig. How dare you place blame on Ford or anyone else. A 351C which NEVER came in a 67 MUSTANG is somehow stuffed into it. The 351C engine family never came in a 67-68 MUSTANG. So what you are acknowledging is the complete drive-train was swapped. If you believe the LOL "all the original engine accessories like air conditioning, power steer, etc, were meticulously put back into place like a factory sleeper Hot Rod should be" - I have some Florida Property for sale..That stuff does not swap from 289 to 351C. A sleeper would have been putting a 390-427-428 in, which are correct as factory/dealer/SHELBY swaps. So what if a thirty plus year old exhaust system falls off-are you surprised? I'd lay dollars to donuts you never inspected that exhaust. They just don't fall off w/o making a long announcement. Finally you did a bunch of repairs and somehow THAT restored Wayne’s reputation, the very guy that built the Jerry Rig. BTW no 67 or 68 MUSTANG ever came with a chin spoiler --That would be 69-70 BOSS
I don't quite see how one could blame Ford for the problems with overheating on a vehicle that had a larger engine installed without upgrading the cooling system. Sort of like my one friends "quarter mile" car. IT would overheat if it was run more than about three minutes. Also, it had quite a rough idle, and the exhaust was very noisy. Plus, the mileage was very poor. BUT the acceleration was great!
