The Diamond Age

We're just a few machine generations away from the world described in Neal Stephenson's "The Diamond Age".  In it, things are created laying down one atom at time, in matter compilers.

Clearly some of the odder chocolate and sand-based 3D printers are still in the experimental project stage and who knows what they'll cost when and if they're commercialized. But there are a growing number of 3D printers available for pretty cheap, that is starting around $1,500. We recently wrote about one such example, and my guess is we'll be seeing much more on this front moving forward.

I'm curious as to what the price points are of this new wave of low-cost 3D printers, and, stemming directly from that, how widely we're likely to see them deployed.

Researchers have been working on a number of alternative chemistries to lithium-ion for next-gen batteries, silicon-air among them.
