A fridge could know when something is low if a weight based sensor is in place or if a level sensor was in a container or pitcher. It would mean that a higher level of standardization of packaging and specific locations in the fridge for different things.

It may not be feasible, but it is an example as to what can be done.

Years ago, I worked with a company to develop weight based bottle sensors that would stop bar tenders from giving out too many free drinks to boost their tips. Every bottle has a specifie location and you are correct, a data base was created and maintained.
