I recently purchased a Fenix PD35 850 lumen LED flashlight and it comes with a warning label that it becomes hot to the touch after running on full for a period of time. After that time period comes, the micro-circuitry powers it down to the next highest setting (and so on) in order to prevent damage. Good article on the subject.

Great discussion on the finer points of LED design considerations.  Also, in addition to price drop, in many cases LED's can also offer the advantage of longer life over the other technologies that they are replacing.

I agree. This Mentor Graphics LED Thermal/Performance analysis software package would have been great to use when I was developing LED lighting fixtures while working at Hunter Fan. This data would have served as a baseline while taking actual thermal and lumen measurements using an Integrating Sphere. Management of thermal and lumen performance of LEDs is quite a challenge especially when you have to add the SMPS (switching mode power supply) LED drivers heat dissipation data using a per-square inch pcb in to the overall thermal equation. Nice article!
