Long, flexible aircraft wings can also bend under pressure from wind gusts and atmospheric turbulence, and researchers will use the MUTT to discover ways to compensate for these factors to make future lightweight aircraft safer, according to NASA. Following the Air Force tests, NASA will take over ownership of the MUTT to continue its own research into lightweight structures and other technologies for future low-emissions transport aircraft.
“To maintain the long-term health of the structure and ride quality in a more flexible airplane, we need to actively alleviate gust loads on the airplane and suppress flutter, so gust load alleviation and active flutter suppression are two of the key technologies that NASA is working to advance,” says Gary Martin, deputy project manager for NASA’s Subsonic Fixed Wing Project at Dryden, in a press statement.
To allow for the testing of various wing configurations and other advanced aerodynamics concepts, designers have outfitted the MUTT with two key features, according to the AFRL. The aircraft’s wings can easily be replaced, and designers are also building a hard point into the X-56A’s fuselage so researchers can mount an additional third engine or some other structural support for testing of joined wing configurations.
The X-56A will also include built-in software to allow engineers to practice flutter suppression by adjusting programs within the flight control computer, according to the AFRL.
Yes, the JETCAT P2000SX is a great engine. I thought it sounded familiar. It is used in scale model jets. I have seen some that go over 200MPH real speed. It was wild. The power to weight ratio is just over 10 (for the engine alone). This is good. It is interesting that NASA and the Air Force are basically using large scale model airplanes for research, isn't it.
Very interesting airplane! It looks like a Burt Rutan design. The jet engines are certianly an interesting part of this design but it seems to limit the flight time with the once through lubrication system. The engine seems to have a 25 hour time between overhauls so I am wondering what must be overhauled in the engine and just how much of the original cost this entails.
Given that jet engines are more efficient at higher speeds I would question their use here in an aircraft design that is apparently not that fast. The evidence for this is the fixed landing gear.
I think that's an excellent observation. Fixed landing gear AND jet engines. Maybe I'm missing something but this does seem a little strange to me. I am a pilot ( fixed wing, single engine ) and the drag created with "gear down" is definitely there and noticeable with increased air speed. I do applaud the Air Force for undertaking basic research on this type of air craft. I suppose we have given up our maned space missions but hopefully, we won't let the Chinese do our reasearch also.

JackieCox—I certainly agree with you.I worked in the aerospace industry some years ago as a team member having engineering responsibility for the Air Force relative to the thrust chambers and turbo pumps of the Titan II missile.It was fascinating work and I definitely can state that, at one time, the United States had superiority over other countries when it came to space flight ( manned or un-manned).The thought of losing our edge when all of the great NASA, supporting vendors and Air Force employees retire or die is extremely troubling.You just don't get that back in a decade or two.How on earth our government could roll over and dismiss all previous efforts in this important technology is beyond me.If you look at federal funding for NASA you will find it to be miniscule compared to the budgets for several other agencies.I have no idea as to our national priorities but it does appear we don't worry much about our national pride.Allowing the Chinese or Russians to do our work for us should make every American ashamed and it puts us in the position of asking "mother may I" every time we "need a lift".Disgraceful in my opinion.

I remember the longeze and varieze designs he created that were canard designs like this one. The design was supposed to be very safe in that the canard forward wing was intended to stall before the main wing, thereby dropping the nose of the aircraft and making it really hard if not impossible to create a stall condition in normal flight.
This was interesting to me for another reason. It turns out, that control surfaces forward of the center of gravity tend to destabilize the craft as the speed increases. That is the reason for the retractable bow planes on hte newer submarines and the folding bow planes on a few of the WWII ships. I believe we learned this from German submarine designs which had a warning about speeds over 9 knots when the bow planes were not folded or retracted.
On the 688 class attack subs the bow planes are mounted in the sail, which is considerably aft of the bow location, this helps in reducing the destabilizing effects.
Another design with a forward canard was the XB70 Valkyrie. I saw the only remaining one at Wright Patterson in Ohio.
I don't recall any designs from Rutan that used jet engines but I think I heard of someone putting a rocket engine on one variant for some kind of specialized testing.
The last paragraph suggests to me some type of closed loop feedback software control system. In addition to aerodynamic advances, I wonder if they are also embedding sensors on critical areas of the wing in order to report real time data back to the main software controller.
