The following statement is HUGE:

"By putting proprietary software in an onboard read-only memory, ams's new sensors can reportedly offer a maximum angle error of just ±0.17° at 14,500 rpm without the need for such components."

 The ability to deliver these results with such a compact system is a real breakthrough.  The majority of rotary encoders today require hardware and software driving up system complexity and certainly costs and of course, the more complex the system, the more costly troubleshooting and repair.  From the slide, it would appear replacement would be the word and not repair.  These components just might be "throw away" which could save significant time and get processes back to normal. I would love to know the reliability and MTTF (mean-time-to-failure) of this system.  I will certainly access the web site and take a look.

Yes, it's definitely a trend, naperlou. Companies like Freescale Semiconductor are even adding MCUs to sensors in their Xtrinsic technology.

Chuck, this seems to be the trend in sensors today.  With the amount of circuitry that can be put on a chip it is easier than ever to integrate the computation with the sensor.  It does indeed make it easier.
