Thanks Charles and far911.  I've also seen how a well-documented audit traceability system can be used by younger engineers to quickly develop the skills needed to become contributing team members.  A well written system can help 'mentor' others by laying out a structured framework and a proven process to abide by.

Excellent points, Greg. Audit traceability is a key here, and it must be especially important for companies building electronically-controlled products that are constantly being upgraded.

I appreciate the audit traceability and knowledge capture on this system.  In many of today's fast-paced environments, good knowledge capture is very important because new team members must quickly learn how to support or modify the design when the previous team members are not present.  This type of system will help companies be more efficient when faced with dynamic and changing resource allocations.

I don't know if GM used product quality software in its system, but it seems like this kind of system might have helped GM make the link between the faulty ignitions switches and its airbag issues. It took GM about ten years to connect the two.

Rob, this is a good example of a topic that has appeared in Design News over the last couple of years.  PLM systems that can integrate all phases of a product lifecycle, including a flexible ability to get information into the system will help increase effieciency and quality.
