Mini supercomputers made up of a bunch of SBCs would undoubtedly save on power costs to run them and cool them. In fact, Parallella (SBC manufacturer) has this in mind.

Besides they take a little too much space on mother boards. Often times fans attached to these heat sinks stop working leaving them vulnerable."

AnandY, this new technology is very much useful in grid and super computing environments. I had seen in such places, the entire room is equipped with AC at keeping the room temperature even less than 15 degree C. such requirements can be minimized to an extend and thus contributing towards green computing.

You are right AnandY. These are god in situations where long end operations are required. The necessity of cooling also can be reduced and hence finally towards green computing.

WinSystems, maker of the new single-board computer, says it is able to serve in those applications without a using a big heat sink to handle its thermal loads."

I think the problems with excess heat during operational phase can be eliminated with this type of solutions. During normal course of working heat dispense is a major issue and certain time it can cause either burning or burst the chip and mother boards. Such unfortunate seans can be avoided.
