I really like the fact that not only does this concept car replace as many parts as possible with bioplastics--kind of like igus' concept car does with its plastic bearings and other parts--but it also runs on biofuel.

The new car smell is probably the same as before. These days, bioplastics for commercial use usually are formulated to look and smell like petro-based plastics.

While always happy about new materials, bioplastics even in cars isn't new.   The epoxies I use are mostly peanut oil or other fat.

Ford used bioplastics and hemp for the Model T doors, etc and was run on 90/10% ethanol/water also known as moonshine so farmers could make their own fuel.

Hemp fiber likely will be a big biomaterial as once it gets legal/going because it;'s so cheap, why Dupont had it made illegal in the first place because it competed too well with his new synthethic rayon, nylon, etc.

It'll also be big in biofuel, building, fedstock materiall as grows so fast with little input.  the seed oil is far too valuable as such a fine oil similar to Sperm Whale oil that still hasn't found a better replacement for lubes, etc.  But cosmetics companies pay $10/gal so they het most of it now.

Bioplastics, fuels, chemicals will be a good part of the future as oil, coal and NG in 20-30 yrs will be too expensive to burn.  Luckily there are many other sources like bio products.

That's too bad.  There's an opportunity for ambient scenting that could make the cars really stand out.

Ambient scenting is sometimes called scent marketing.  We're all very familiar with it.  When a store "smells like Christmas" or suddenly the smell of fresh baked cookies wafts through a mall making us seek out sweets, we're reacting to scent marketing.

New car smell is so popular that it's part of the vernacular.  Ambient scenting is used in consumer products in smaller ways, i.e. scratch and sniff jeans for kids. 

Personally, I'd tie the scent to the component that the bio-plastic is derived from if it's appealing.  Other choices could be to ink it to the colour.  Red=strawberries, brown=chocolate, cream=jasmine, green=grass or apples, etc.

Nadine, thanks for that definition and info. Bioplastics makers have usually worked hard to make sure their products *don't* smell like the feedstocks, for example, in the case of algae-based bioplastics. Most of them don't come from particularly good-smelling sources, or they come from relatively neutral-smelling ones. I doubt if ambient scenting has entered manufacturers' radar screens yet. Most of the effort to date has been getting processes scaled and materials up to par.

I would think that in terms of flammability, the bioplastic would be more environmentally friendly over traditional automotive polymers.

I do wonder about the material burning, and at what temperature it starts burning. Combustion is a very big concern with automotive plastics, and this one may not pass that test. None of my experiences with plastics in cars have been what I would call "good", so pardon me for being just a bit skepticle. And one more concern is about how a biodiesel spill will affrect the bioplastic body panels. Is there any information about that?

William, I think skepticism is good. But plastics that are processed at high temperatures only melt at high temperatures. Fabrics already in use in many cars, no matter what they are made of, start burning at lower temperatures. And there's no particular reason to think a biodiesel spill will affect plastic car parts and worse than a perto-based diesel spill would. So I'm not sure what your concern is about these materials vs others already in use.

Ann, My concern about fire resistance is that this is a new material without a lot of history, so how it performs is not well known. And about the biodiesel fuel attacking the plastic, the concept of "like disolves like" is hard to ignore. It may indeed not be a problem, but that will depend on the similarity of the molecular structures. Sometimes things don't work exactly the way folks thought that they would. Now we do simulations, previously we did prototypes.

William, materials used in passenger cars, or in any vehicle used by citizens/consumers, are strictly regulated. I'd be very surprised if these hadn't been already tested for flammability. Test procedures these days can be very sophisticate and thorough.

The thermoformable plywood like material is not really anything new.  VanDresser in Fostoria Ohio has been making interior body panels from a thermoformable wood product using wood fiber, a small amount of recycled textile fibers, and a heat flowable bonding agent for years.

The product is made into a formable sheet that can be stamped with a hot press and allows areas of variable density.

When petrolium prices are up, it does really well, when they are down, not so well.
