Elizabeth, this is a very interesting device.  I wonder about its use in phones.  I can see a device such as a laptop.  I think the phone would have trouble consuming all that bandwidth.  I may be wrong, though.  I am just thinking about my boys watching movies on their phones via WiFi.

It also seems to me that its limited range for data transfer would make it not as desirable...even if you are faster, if you don't have much range you wil only frustrate the user...

@nancy: Yes the range does matter a lot. Speed also is an important factor but its useless if you do not have a proper range.

Well I think the point of the device, Lou, is that it allows for this bandwidth and doesn't consume a lot of power, so the phone battery won't die out so quickly. The chip has been engineered specifically to allow the mobile device to do this.

Yes, Nancy, you touch on the biggest criticism of WiGig--the range.

That said, Elizabeth - I would think the limitation of such an important parameter as range  does not make WiGig a very viable technology except for very specific niche applications...

Liz, any idea if the WiGig base stations could be used in homes? Or would that be too costly?

Hey, Chuck, I am pretty sure they could be used in homes as well, but let me double check on that and get back to you. I'll have to check the cost. I think they would be the perfect solution for the home, though.

They could develop Wi-Fi at 1GHz speeds and I would still have a spotty connection in my area and I live in the heart of a major city! I say focus on the connection first then give me the speed.

Yes, you point out the inherent problems that still exist with WiFi and general Internet coverage, even in cities. Same with general mobile device coverage in some places.
