Nice article, Al. Boy, it's surprising how much safety has changed in recent years. It wasn't very long ago that the idea of running safety and control on the same cable was considered a crackpot idea. Now you'd have to be a crackpot not to do it.

It has changed. One wonders how far this will fragment before someone (IEC?) steps in and creates standards in terms of data and protocol?

As a customer, do I really want to worry about what is the best choice for me? PROFIsafe? CIP Safety? openSAFETY? FSoE?

...Or am I going to just default to whosever PLC is already designed in? Meaning, if I have a Logix PLC/PAC, do I just default to CIP Safety and hope ROK has my back?

If a customer will tend to default to his incumbent PLC provider, how would an ABB or Phoenix or Pilz or "other" Safety PLC play?

That's a good question Evanskollmorgen, especially since it's logical that customers will default to their PLC provider. Then it becomes a matter of trusting your PLC provider. But what are the alternatives?
