You're welcome, Dave. I've written on fasteners a few times before and was surprised at the amazing range that's available, as well as the variety of different materials used in their construction. Protecting against seawater can be a challenge. I don't know what your application is, but I wonder if a combination of fasteners and some of the coatings and adhesives used for extreme environments might work. Ann, thanks for the focus on fastening technologies.  Too often, engineers (and buyers, and managers) tend to dismiss fasteners as cheap commodity parts.  In reality, a product is only as good as the fastening elements that hold it together.

It was interesting to see the Pattonair Uniseal screws.  I've been looking at ways to seal bolted joints against seawater in a marine environment.  There are many products that incorporate o-ring seals; besides Pattonair's Uniseal screws, Parker's Stat-O-Seal washers come to mind.

Does anyone have any experience with bolted joints that incorporate rubber o-rings? Does using o-rings turn a "hard" joint into a "soft" joint (by reducing the stiffness of the joint relative to the bolt)? What happens over time as the o-ring takes a set? What are the effects on preload retention and vibration loosening?

Maybe these would be good questions for Pattonair at their booth at the show!

MD&M is often recognized as a medical show, but it's truly much more than that. As you point out, Ann, a high percentage of the exhibitors are showing assembly and manufacturing technologies that would apply to virtually any manufacturing enterprise.
