@Cadmen: Yes they have done some good work recently. Yes it is unfair if you say no as an overall result on them.

I was just recenlty in Germany and I drove 4 turbo diesel rentals. Hyundai I30, Ford Focus, Merc A-class, and a Ford C-max. They were all pretty awesome. Tons of torque, no turbo lag and they all went 200kph on the autobahn. I have the feeling that the small cars over here are 10 years behind the European offerings. Especially in the wagon and hatch models.

Many of the diesels in Europe have great performance.  When I took my driver's test in England I had an examiner who was a real gear head (I had been briefed on the two examiners).  So, I got him talking about hot cars.  I didn't have to do half of what is usually required.  One of the cars he liked was a turbo diesel.  He had driven it in Germany on the Autobahn.  They really are much cleaner that diesels of old.

I take that back. I think they have made some decent desiels. Fast ones at that!

I think that buyers of "premium diesel" cars will look elsewhere. In the mean time I'm still looking for a replacement for my '02 tdi golf......
