Bearing Life Prediction for Gearboxes With Applied Overhung Loads

Determine the OHL rating for a gearbox

I tried to design a gearbox .And I believe I choose the right bearings with no OHLs on the output shaft.But I am not sure how to determine how much OHLs it can afford under the required input horse power.My design process is :
design the gears with enough strength -> calculate the loads on the bearings which are generated by the gears -> choose bearings L10h >5000hrs under a 1.0 service factor
If there is no OHLs on the output shaft, the design is finish.
But if I need a OHL rating for this unit, how can I do ?

Thank you for your kind comments.  We rely on our bearing supplier to adjust our bearing life when conditions other than those assumed during the time of the original design.  Yes, our application engineers do make adjsutments based on the change in oil type or other environments conditions such as extreme temperature or excessive overhung or shock loads.

Thank you for the question, the reason the hollow output shaft has a higher overhung rating is because our reducers have larger bearings for the hollow bores versus the solid output shafts.

Excellent post Mitchell --very informative.  I definitely depend upon suppliers for specifying and providing gear boxes for the equipment I use to automate work cell assemblies. One of the things I find fascinating are the influences environmental conditions and lubricants have on gear box life.  I'm sure in your work you quantify these factors also.  Again, great post.

Please somone explain to me why the solid output shaft has a lower life than the hollow shaft.
