Toyota has developed a new robotic personal assistant that can help the elderly or other people with limited mobility who may need an extra hand doing things around the house.
The Toyota Human Support Robot (HSR) prototype is a one-armed robot that specializes in picking things up off the floor, retrieving objects from high locations, or opening curtains, according to the company. It performs these tasks by way of a 30.5-inch, single folding arm with a gripper on the end that also can suction thin objects from the floor or another surface.
The HSR is relatively compact but extendable, measuring about 14.5 inches in diameter and with a height range of about 3 feet to nearly 5 feet. The 70.5-pound robot can hold objects weighing nearly 3 pounds or less and measuring about 5 inches across. It has a maximum speed of nearly 2 mph.

Although the robot is mobile and can pick things up and make other autonomous moves with its arm, Toyota has designed it not to exert too much force, allowing it to be safely used in the home, the company said. A user or a user's caregiver can control Toyota's HSR via a tablet device or through voice commands. The robot also has a dock on its head for mounting the tablet so users can watch media or video chat with family members or other caregivers.
The HSR prototype is part of the Toyota Partner Robot series, through which the company is designing and building robots to help assist people with everyday activities. It is designed especially for people with limited arm or leg mobility and was created in collaboration with Japan's Service Dog Association, according to Toyota, which has already worked with the Foundation for Yokohama Rehabilitation Service to perform trials of the HSR in the homes of people with limb disabilities. Feedback from the trial was considered in the design of the prototype, the company said.
Toyota's latest prototype is part of a growing trend in the field of robotics to create robots that work safely alongside people, both at home and in a business setting, to perform everyday tasks more efficiently and easily.
The CompanionAble project has also been demonstrating its own home robotic assistant, dubbed Hector, across Europe. Like Toyota's HSR, Hector also can respond to voice commands and is controlled by a tablet device. It is aimed at helping elderly or disabled people in the home.
Other robots are meant to make business activities more efficient. iRobot co-founder Rodney Brooks' startup Rethink Robotics recently unveiled the sophisticated Baxter robot to work alongside people in a factory, while a creative chef in Beijing has spawned a new legion of robots to perform the mundane task of slicing noodles in restaurants -- an assembly-line repetitive activity that can be tiring for human workers.
In a recent issue of the IEEE Proceedings on Quality of Life Technology there was a robot with a humanlike body used for a similar purpose. This seems more practical, and probably much less expensive, for a range of simple tasks.
One of the longest emerging trends in geriatric healthcare is using robots. In the 90's, many realized that a Ferby (that hamster-like robot toy), could be a good companion to those who were unable to care for pets. Robotics enabled assisted living in already used in in Japan and Europe.
Ferby, I haven't seen one of those in a while. Once when we were driving from Olso to Stockholm we stopped at a McDonalds in the countryside. The toy in the Happy Meal was a mini Ferby. The main problem with it was that it answered back in Swedish.

Recently, we've shown a lot of humanoid robots on our web site and quite honestly some of them are a little creepy. I like the looks of this robot. No "uncanny valley" here.
Creepy is relative. I can remember bosses being "creeped out" by email when it first came into the workplace. Could we do business without it today?
On a more similar note, realistic animation had several hurdles because of the uncanny valley hypothesis. People just weren't ready to see a "not quite human" reality on screen. Designers have worked around that by using more realistic effects in anthropomorphic characters (notice how Alex the Lion's hair in the movie Madagascar blows in the wind). Human characters still need to look like animation to be accepted in the main stream but it's slowly changing. Video gaming and adult entertainment have used more realistic animation for years. People are getting used to it.
It's interesting that so many over the age of 60 embrace human-like robots (there must be a pun in there somehow). Typically we only expect children to gravitate towards new technology easily.
Charles, I agree. I want a robot to look like a machine, not my next door neighbor. I understand that for some individuals to accept a robot it has to have a warm and pleasing appearance and the Toyota robot is in cusp of providing it. Rethink Robotics' Baxter I believe has achieved the warm pleasing appearance attribute.
Nice development by Toyota. Always a forward looking company. It made me smile - partly because I could imagine having such a helper one day. The "mature citizen" of the future just may have this machine, an automatic floor sweeping robot, maybe even an automatic "closet" that can help them get dressed. It will be a very different world from what our parents experienced.
