What costs are involved?

A lot of the advances in automation in manufacturing have been driven by cost savings. Does this apply to the smart grid as well? If so, I would imagine the advances would come fairly quickly.

Smart grid is going to top all the "top 10" predictions lists we'll soon see regarding which technologies are going to be coming to the fore in 2012. It's firing on multiple economic cylinders, as far as encompassing innovation, efficiency (ROI), and infrastructure. The build-out of the smart grid will be an economic engine as much as a technological one.
