Dell is staking out the high end of the market with the Precision M6400, a 17-inch, 8.54-lb unit that pushes the storage, memory and processor capabilities of mobile workstation-class systems to the next level.
The Precision M6400, now the flagship offering in Dell's laptop line, ups workstation-level performance for digital content creators, engineers and animation professionals. It offers up to 16 Gbytes of RAM and a 1 Gbyte graphics card, along with support for Intel's Core 2 Duo Quad-Core QX9300 Extreme Edition quad-core processor. The system also features four memory slots and a RAID capability with up to a terabyte of storage accessible on two drives.
Dell officials say the M6400's new configuration doubles the amount of memory and processor cores available on most mobile workstation platforms while tripling the storage capacity. As the performance of mobile processors increase, there's a growing momentum among all types of users to transition to a laptop and the M6400 gives users a platform that is on par with traditional, high-end desktop configurations. “Engineers and designers want to have the same flexibility that any other business person has when using a mobile product,” says Antonio Julio, Dell's director for the Precision line of business.
The M6400 can be outfitted with Intel's Core 2 Duo and Extreme Edition processors, including the X9100 (for 3.06 GHz of performance) dual core or QX9300 (2.53 GHz) quad core. Dell is also offering the unit with a choice of 17-inch displays, including its Ultrasharp WUXGA RGBLED edge-to-edge unit.
The unit is also stocked with the NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M or FX3700M graphics cards and it has been certified to run most leading CAD and engineering applications. Pricing starts at $2,599.
