Combining motors with precision motion control actuators, and the way they are combined, has everything to do with the success of many precision motion control applications. Custom integration in the field can be effective, but suppliers are integrating motors with actuators in new product designs and creating a new breed of standard products that deliver improved, repeatable performance.
New motor-actuator combinations are designed to meet a wide range of technical and cost goals. But the key is the way these subassemblies reduce assembly time and total system costs by limiting labor and testing in the field. Usually combined in compact and affordable packages, these new products are designed to be effectively and efficiently applied to a customer's particular applications needs. They are often designed to be easily configured for a particular set of specific motion control applications. Key benefits include more reliable system interconnections, more precise alignment, reduced times for system assembly and more rigorous product testing at the factory.
LINEAR ACTUATORS WITH INTEGRATED CONNECTOR
Size 11 hybrid linear actuators from Haydon Switch & Instrument are now available with an integrated connector. Offered alone or with a harness assembly, the connector is RoHS-compliant and features a positive latch in order for high connection integrity. The connector is rated up to 3 amps and the mating connector will handle a range of wire gauges from 22 to 28. This motor is ideal for those with space constraints or that want to plug in directly to pre-existing harnesses.
These hybrid linear actuators are available in a wide variety of resolutions ranging from 0.000125 inch (.003175 mm) per step to 0.002 inch (.0508 mm) per step and deliver thrusts of up to 25 lb without compromising long life and cost. Applications requiring precise positioning and rapid motion are best suited for this motor. These actuators are drop-in replacements to improve performance and service life.
GEARHEAD MODULAR SPINDLE DRIVES
The GP22S and GP32S gearheads from Maxon are specifically adjusted for spindles and designed to withstand high loads. Special spindle intake means customer-specific spindles can be assembled with ease in significantly less time.
Three different standard spindle types are available: metric spindles, trapeze spindles and spherical rotating spindles. The spindles are available in steel or ceramic variations up to 200 mm in length and supplied with matching spindle nuts.
Gearheads, motors, encoders and controllers are used to drive the spindles. Individual components of the spindle drives are all compatible to help create highly effective drive solutions. These modified planetary gearheads are available in two different sizes, with diameters of 22 and 32 mm. Reduction ratios of 3.7:1 to 1093:1 provide maximum torques of 6 Nm and speeds of up to 1600 min-1. The additional axial bearings of these gearheads can also withstand powerful axial forces from the spindles.
CONFIGURABLE SINGLE-AXIS ACTUATORS
Single-axis actuators from MISUMI USA are available in 208 configured styles with lead times of 11 working days. The actuators are compatible with most servo motors and provide linear motion for assembly, automotive, packaging and medical manufacturing.
Each unit is a ball-screw driven device built on an extruded 6063-T6 aluminum base with black anodized finish and 1045 steel side supports. By configuring a C10 ball screw diameter (12 to 20 mm) and lead (4 to 20 mm), along with base width, stroke and table length, OEMs can specify a specific actuator without customizing a standard unit.
Key features include a linear slide for medium or heavy loads, grooved base for sensor mounting, top plate with tapped holes for switch flags on both sides and a tight-tolerance bore (DH7) motor bracket to accept most 30 to 400W servos. Positioning repeatability with specifications as low as ±0.03 mm and parallelism and maximum velocities to 1055 mm/sec, are available.
HIGH SPEED OR HIGH FORCE LA36 ACTUATORS
LINAK is offering a high-speed electric actuator built on its LA36 actuator platform. With a speed of up to 6.3 inch sec (160 mm/sec) without a load and a maximum force of 112 lb (500N), the products are important additions to the LINAK product range.
The actuator was originally introduced to manufacturers of electrical bollards for traffic control, but the company identified other applications where speed is a critical element and where a fast actuator can add value.
A high force version of the LA36 actuator with a maximum load of 2,247 lb (10,000N) is also available. Lifting 2,200 lb with a 36, 24 or 12V dc motor creates an extreme demand on both the mechanics and the electronics which the company solved this problem by improving and strengthening the design of the LA36 actuator.
Both products offer fast and easy installation, accuracy, repeatability, reliability and advanced control of critical machine operations.
RIGHT ANGLE GEAR REDUCERS OFFER VERSATILITY
alpha gear's new LPK+ is the right-angle equivalent to its LP+ low-backlash planetary gearhead and is designed for servo applications demanding low-to-medium precision.
For use in Cartesian robots using a timing belt drive, palletizers or loading/unloading robots, the LPK+ assures high rigidity due to its planetary stage on the output side. It withstands high timing belt pre-tension and its right-angle design requires only minimal installation space.
LPK+ is available in five sizes with acceleration torques up to 250 Nm, torsional backlash limited to &10 arc min and a peak speed of 6,000 rpm. The gearhead comes with 10 reduction ratios. LPK+ can optionally be supplied with an alpha rack-and-pinion system and shaft couplings. From positioning feed axes, motorized auxiliary axes, heavy-duty loading axes and economical rotary axes, the LPK+ is a versatile performer in any application that must meet exacting productivity and reliability requirements yet still remain affordable.
