Turck recently announced the release of its new FCMI magnetic flow meter, available for 3/8-inch pipes. This inline system can gage measurements with up to 2 percent accuracy – significantly more than their previous calometric- or thermal principal-based meters.
“We’re trying to find those applications where they may have laser marking, laser labeling – anything with high dollar items requiring coolants or lubricants where they want more information than flow/no flow,” says Roger Saba, senior product manager for instrumentation at Turck.
The FCMI uses Faraday’s magnetic induction principle to determine and measure flow. “Basically it’s got two magnets, and as the flow occurs the magnetic field pulls the positively and negatively charged ions to the walls, which is the linear reaction to the flow,” says Saba. The meter can only be used with conductive liquids, making it ideal for water-based lubricants and paints, but no good at all for oil- or petroleum-based liquids.
Another advantage of this meter is it has no moving or obstructing parts. This eliminates foreign objects within the pipe, which would normally disrupt flow or change the diameter of the pipe. There is also no risk of fragmentation from the FCMI or disruption of the system because there are no parts to break. These benefits give the FCMI a longer life cycle before requiring maintenance.
