Ford (www.ford.com) and General Motors (www.gm.com) have agreed to jointly develop a high-volume, front-wheel-drive, 6-speed automatic transmission that would offer a 4% improvement in fuel economy over 4-speed automatic transmissions available in today's cars. Other new features would include a wider gear ratio span, a compact design, and higher torque capacity. The new transmission would be available in mid-to-late decade on front-wheel-drive cars and SUVs.
