Ford (www.ford.com) and General Motors (www.gm.com) have agreed to jointly develop a high-volume, front-wheel-drive, 6-speed automatic transmission that would offer a 4% improvement in fuel economy over 4-speed automatic transmissions available in today's cars. Other new features would include a wider gear ratio span, a compact design, and higher torque capacity. The new transmission would be available in mid-to-late decade on front-wheel-drive cars and SUVs.
Sensor deployment in automated factories should be done slowly and conservatively, otherwise engineers may face the loss of hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, an Internet of Things expert will tell attendees at the upcoming Design & Manufacturing Show in Minneapolis.
