When you make home audio systems that sell for tens of thousands of dollars, every factor is critical. McIntosh Lab. Inc. of Binghamton, NY, covers its front panel with 1/2 inch-thick tempered glass, so lighting for the meters and the logo have to be sharp. Lumitex Inc. of Strongsville, OH, devised a woven, layered panel of fiber optics to disperse light from blue and green LEDs. Other techniques didn’t disperse light evenly across the surface of the dials, but the interwoven fibers handle that while providing the proper mix of green and blue from the LEDs.
