As Americans look back on the five-year anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, more information is emerging on the events of that day. With several theories out there, Design News reports on the findings of a Professor of structural engineering at the University of California Berkeley who has just completed an FEA simulation of the planes hitting the towers. Here’s an exclusive report. We’re also taking a look back at Design News coverage of that fateful day with past articles. With coverage from within our pages on everything from a look inside the inner workings of today’s data centers following the loss of power to lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001 to the lessons learned at Ground Zero by robotic designers during rescue efforts, we’ve included links to all coverage during the past five years. |

Engineers make a difference
In response to an editorial I wrote recently about declining enrollment in engineering, I received dozens of letters from design engineers who are discouraged and disillusioned by their career choice. Many of you say you feel unappreciated and undervalued, noting that your technical achievements frequently go unrecognized by senior management at your companies and are ignored by the general public. Hard lessons for robots at the World Trade Center
Robots that rushed to Ground Zero after the September 11th attacks to locate survivors and victims provided some hard lessons for their developers. In a presentation at the annual AeroSense meeting in Orlando, FL, Scott Pratt of iRobot provided insight as to what urban search and rescue (USAR) robots will need to be successful. Full Story

Device 'listens' for sounds of life at WTC
"This makes Oklahoma City look like child's play," says Cynthia Fajardo, a police officer and Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) search manager at the World Trade Center.
