The 2006 Civic Hybrid connects a 20 hp/76 ft-lb permanent magnet motor to a four-cylinder spark ignition engine to provide a total of 110 hp at 6,000 rpm. Mounted behind the rear seat, the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) contains the battery and its controls, the inverter for the motor, the air conditioning inverter, and a dc-to-dc converter. The hybrid's Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery has a rated capacity of 5.5 Ah and high voltage output of 158V. To warn service personnel and others of the presence of high voltage (greater than 60V), high-voltage cables that interconnect these components are color coded orange as identified in SAE-J1127.
