The action starts with the push of a button or activation of a relay. Switches that combine functions including lighting with the switch are just one of the ways that suppliers provide more cabinet space to designers. In some cases, the switches and relays provide special functionality for specific applications. In an industrial environment, the space saving can be in inventory from flexible units that can be easily reconfigured and reduce stocking requirements for increased shelf space.
ULTRAMINIATURE ATTENUATOR RELAYS
Teledyne Relays designed its A150 Ultraminiature Attenuator Relays Series to attenuate RF signals in 50-V systems over a frequency range from dc to 3 GHz. Available in fixed increments of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 16 and 20 dB, units can be used separately or in combination for specific attenuation levels. Internally matched thin-film attenuator pads in "L," "T" or "Pi" configurations eliminate the need for additional external resistors and save space in applications. The hermetic unit measures .49× .375×.28 inch (12.45×9.53×7.11 mm), weighs 0.11 ounce (3.2g), and comes with a minimum of 0.7-inch (17.78-mm) leads. SEALED SMT ROCKER SWITCH
E-Switch's 400B Series rocker switch is a low-profile unit that allows SMT right angle mounting along circuit board edges. Designed to project beyond the board, the actuator can be accessed through an instrument case slot or an enclosure, thus eliminating remote wiring. With a dielectric strength of 1000V ac, units come with either silver contacts rated 3A at 120V ac or 1A at 28V dc or gold contacts rated at 0.4V at 20V ac or dc. Initial contact resistance is a maximum of 0.02V. The switch is 19.27×8.25×5.70 mm (0.759×0.325×0.224 inch) and operates within temperature ranges from -30 to +85C. The 400B Series has a cycle life of 6,000 electrical cycles and 50,000 mechancial cycles. For more information on E-Switchs' right-angle SMT switch, go tohttp://rbi.ims.ca/4416-605.
Carling Technologies' V-Series switches offer alternative panel designs and options for colors, illumination, ratings, and legends. Lighting options include neon, incandescent lamps and LED illumination in a wide array of light intensities, colors, dual level illumination, and flashing options. The Series offers over 500 lens and body legends and fits a standard 21.08×36.83 mm panel opening. Certified to IP66/IP68, dual seal protection keeps out water, dust, and debris. An optional panel seal prevents problems from water and dust behind the panel. With a roller pin mechanism eliminating the need for lubricants, units can operate from -40 to +85C. The line is available in both eight and ten-terminal base options with AMP & Packard compatible connectors available. ILLUMINATED AND NON-ILLUMINATED PUSHBUTTON SWITCHES
E-Switch RP Series of round pushbutton switches come in illuminated and non-illuminated versions for use in applications such as appliances, lamps, computers, and other consumer electronic devices. Rated at 3A at 125V ac and 1.5A at 250V ac, the switch has silver plated solder lugs and a maximum contact resistance of 100 mV. The SPST, Off-(ON) and SPDT, Off-On configurations come with translucent lenses and yellow, green, and red LEDs. The miniature switches have an electrical life of 6,000 cycles at maximum load and operating temperatures that range from 0C to +65C. COAXIAL MICROWAVE SWITCHES
Teledyne Relays CCR-39 Coaxial Microwave Switches handle multiple microwave signals and provide status feedback in a single packaged unit. This new series is a multi-throw, broadband, latching microwave device that provides users up to a 6-pole, 7-throw performance as well as an option for diagnostic feedback. The 50-V characteristic impedance switches use connector spacing on a circle with a 1.062-inch (26.97 mm) diameter and an individual actuator mechanism in each position allows random position selection. The CCR-39 also has a latching actuator rated at 12, 15 or 28V dc that permits the user to conserve power by pulse operating the switch. The CCR-39 is available with or without indicator contacts, self-cutoff only, and moisture seals. For more information on Teledyne's CCR-39 switches, go to http://rbi.ims.ca/4416-609.
MULTI-FUNCTION LIGHTED PUSHBUTTON SWITCH
Electro-Mech Components, Inc. developed a compact, multi-image/multi-functional series of lighted pushbutton switches for space-limited control panels. The new compact series offers dual and quad displays in ranges of SPST to 4PDT switch functions. The 644-2100 can replace up to four individual switches providing a reduction of 75 percent of panel mounting space. Displaying quadrant or full segments or in split configurations, units are available in different cap lens, filter, and legend materials. Units come with continuously visible legends or hidden legends that become visible when switch functions are activated. Target applications include aircraft, avionics, simulation systems, and any control application with limited panel space. MORE VERSATILE SWITCHES
Similar to other Carling Technologies Contura switches, the wave design for the sealed rocker switches provides new options for users. The lenses and center portion of the actuator are snap-in, which will allow additional flexibility and reduced stocking. ROCKER CONTACT DOOR SWITCH
Omron developed its D3D miniature door switch for lower costs, high reliability, and improved installation productivity in industrial and appliance equipment. For easy installation, the switch uses standard removable crimp connectors and snaps into a panel. The D3D's wiping contacts minimize arcing possibilities and offer silent operation. With accepted usage in Japan and Europe in CFC- free refrigerants, rocker contact technology will offer the same advantages for similar applications in North America. Typical uses include factory equipment, home electronics, and appliance applications —especially refrigerant appliances because of the no-arc performance. JUMBO SAFETY LIGHT FOR PANEL SWITCH
When used with its HW series of switches, IDEC Corporation's Jumbo Dome Pilot Lights add the safety factor of visibility from a distance to the panel switch. With a diameter of 66 mm and a height of 50.5 mm, the amber, green, red, blue, white and yellow colored lenses use LED or incandescent lamps at 24V ac /dc. A diffusing lens is also available. The lights are UL listed, CSA approved, and TUV marked. Target applications include muting lights for safety curtains and 1-tier light towers. For more information on IDEC's Jumbo Dome Pilot Lights, go to http://rbi.ims.ca/4416-613.
DUAL PUSHBUTTON SERIES
IDEC Corp. designed its HW7 switch as dual pushbutton units for off-on or up-down applications. The switch comes with either a momentary contact or mechanical interlock option that prevents the operator from pressing both buttons simultaneously and activating two contacts at once. A standard feature of these units is a center pilot light with illumination either from LEDs or incandescent lamps. Finger-safe contacts and a removal contact block adaptor with safety lock provide safety and easy installation. HW7 switches are CSA approved, CE and TUV marked, UL listed, and have IP40 protection (with an optional silicon cover IP65 protection level).
